Car-crashing craziness ... for a good cause
« on: June 03, 2013, 03:39:24 PM »
On Saturday I attended a "demolition derby" here in my home town. Here is a short video of one "race" I made with the A77. The video is over 3 minutes. It is 2 minutes longer than chappo1's attention span. :) Kidding John!

The event was sponsored by the Kinsmen and all money raised is going toward a new ($175,000) play park for children...all good. It is a rather crazy event, but for a good cause. It was a lovely spring day and over 3,000 people attended.

Comments:
-- the last car moving is the winner of the event. The last two cars have to be "repaired" and entered in the finals.
-- when a car is no longer moving the driver breaks off the wooden lath in the driver-side roof .. once the slat is broken the car can no longer be intentionally hit
-- the "races" took place in a dirt field that soon will be a new subdivision in our rapidly growing town
-- despite what looks like a dangerous event, the top speeds attained might be 20 kph and there are strict safety measures in place
-- the radiators are removed and re-installed inside the car interior
-- gas tanks are removed and replaced with small portable tanks inside
-- cars are equipped with safety "roll bars" specifically in the front of the driver
-- no car can be hit in the driver-side door .. most driver doors are painted white.
-- the arena is very small (about 75 meters square) and there was a wide safety buffer (~50 m) around the track
-- the arena is surrounded with a dirt berm and beyond the safety buffer is a two-stage "moat" that would prevent any car from traveling very far .. no cars were forced out of the first safety berm
-- at each corner of the arena, two fire fighters stood with fire extinguishers
-- there was a full compliment of emergency staff and fire firefighters
-- there were no incidents .. the small fire (video) was extinguished in seconds

Clive,

Nice! I remember going to see a demolition derby years ago at the Hednesford Hills Raceway in the UK. Great fun to watch, and in your case a noble cause too with the money raised. I see on the Internet the Hednesford Raceway is still going >30-years later, which is amazing.

I must get out and practice with the video capability of my A77, but I have purchased a little GoPro Silver recently, so I have been playing with that trying to mount it to one of my underwater HID video lights. for scuba diving use.

Cheers

Nice Clive and thanks for posting the rules.
I of course did not read the rules until after and what caught my attention was the houses so close to the action but you covered that off..

That's amazing - I was going to say exactly the same! I used to live in Hednesford as a young boy and my dad would take me to the stock car and demolition derby events - ahhh memories.

Good stuff Clive BTW. All for a good cause too.

Cheers,
