'Looks like LA, I can see Sandra Bullock behind the weel' ... lol. On a serious note I believe it is a US city, Boston perhaps?

Should be LA, found a movie on youtube about bus #9296 as seen in the picture and in the movie you can also see
the tram with grey and red like in the pic, also the palmtrees tell it is a city where it is most of the time hot.
So LA is a great choice, let's wait and see if it is correct.

hmm... either in a police helicopter following that bomb laden bus, a media helicopter, or standing on a walkway. hee hee. LA would be my guess, too.

It is down town LA. Not from a helicopter but from a walkway across S Flower Street between the Westin Bonaveture Hotel and the YMCA.

Downtown is strange there, lots of buildings but few people.

Over to you pointblank.

Looks like left-hand drive roads to me. It also has the look of Australian architecture, but odd looking trees. So it must be Auckland. ;)

Well that's a Commonwealth Bank sign and they are big in Indonesia, independence day for Indonesia is 17 August, the day this shot was taken (A700 probably with a 16-80 Zeiss) :)  So it's either Jakarta or another city in Indonesia :)

Panoramix is looking deeply into a new cauldron. He also got some new herbs. Since everything is new he thinks that the picture is in the new world.

Cuba to be precise (or not).

If it is isn't Panoramix predicts that he will be wrong.

.... too much Druid beer the last few days.

AHA!

Yes, tis Cuba. Well done panoramix!

But Wally was staying where? ;) City and building name required since that was WAY too easy. :P :D

And one more thing for bonus points. ;)

What civilized thing can a person do in this building that you are unable to do in most uncivilized places like where you and I live?

Evil grin!

Stef.
Title: Re: Where's Wally? Part VI
Post by: Clive on September 29, 2009, 03:03:23 PM
Well done Stef. (Welcome back BTW...)

You got the "smoking a cigar" correct...you can do that in a hotel lobby on Cuba. Smells GREAT! (Yeah yeah...others won't agree. :P )

BUT La Floridita, where "Papa" drank, is a tiny pub as is the much smaller La Bodeguita.

The large building is another. What is it? ;)

Easy peasy!

A grand old hotel. Once you've checked in (which can take 4 hours ;) ) it is rather nice.

Post something from SFO Stef. ;)

panoramix dun good as well by getting Cuba first.

Ok,

No problem, so let me up the game and see if some one can figure out where Wally is today. The only clue that I will post is that Wally does feel he is more European than anything else. (take the clue with a grain of salt)....

Not fair. You guessed right. I was already thinking of a number of clues to post to make it really interesting. On the good side I am happy that you beat Clive. I had a feeling that he may knew since it looks like he has traveled extensively.

Any way it is Corrientes avenue in Buenos Aires. The address is named in a famous Tango song by Carlos Gardel.

Cheers

Unbelievable! Honestly, it was really a wild guess. I have Argentina on my list to visit someday but I've never been there. My mum always 'blamed' me for having deja-vu moments, I guess this is just one of them.

Okay, Wally will let you know his next destination soon. He needs to sort out the latest travel memories. Keep you updated soon!

Got it! Wally just came back from another trip and while he was out there he had a craving for food, hence below memory for you to guess where he went. I think it should not be so difficult this time, but you never know ..

Sure, when you visit Mount Fuji in Japan there is a visitor's center. (Pretty cold up there by the way f you are no longer used to it .. lol) Inside one of the booths you can warm yourself up sitting next to the fire place with a nice warm cup of coffee. For snack lovers, they sell little 'Mount Fuji' cakes. Just look at the shape how they make 'the snow' appear on it, just lovely.

Mount Fuji has an enormous cultural value in Japan, in fact the Japanese call the mountain 'Fuji San'. Perhaps Winjeel can share a bit more, after all he lives just around the corner ... ;-)

Hmm .. there are only a few systems like this in the world and I have been on most of them. It's not Bergamo, the lovely city that was built in two parts, one downtown and one uptown (literally) and you need to take the funicolare to get up there if you want to go the easy way.

You can be downtown in the mist and uptown on top of the clouds!

Anyway, for this one. I'd say Wally visited Penang Hill in Malaysia. I can't remember however whether it is an open one. It has too .. it's too darn hot here ... !

Nah .. wrong country.

But Wally's place ends is "falls"

Columbia Falls is southish across the 49th parallel. Wally is northish.

Check my profile. ;) re: 120 km from my house as the crow flies.

Unfortunately the falls do not have the same name as the river. Darn.

But if St petersburg was nearest then it suggests Estonia or Latvia

Okay..this is my very last Wally image until I travel somewhere else. I have run out of places ...

Wally took this picture of Leon and Clive just outside of a train station somewhere. This is pretty evil, so will accept the region  and country vs. the actual city.

Very good JimA, but no cigar yet. There are two Mongolias, so I need to know which one it is and for bonus points can you tell us what the two Mongolias are?

well I placed it in Mongolia from the bow of the archer they mongol hordes used short bicurved bows to shoot from horseback

Total knowledge of Mongolia without Wiki

Inner and outer -- one of them has capital of Ulan Bator

oh and the nomads lived in yurts

my guess is there aren't a lot of train stations in the area

Not UB .. and this city is not a capital anyway.

Outer Mongolia is an "old" term and no longer applicable...but I know what you mean?

So what is it then?  An "innee" or an "outee"? :P

according to my friend WIki  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inner_Mongolia

the region is known as öbör mongγol where öbör can mean south, inner, front, bosom, breast

I know which of those I find most appealing

Of course the chinese characters mean it can't be the state that used to be known as outer Mongolia it would be cyrrillic there

but for a bonus point is the statue of Erhii Mergen ?

In Mongolia, the thumb is referred to as Erhii Mergen, the name of a famous archer of Mongol legend. The significance of the thumb in Mongol culture has everything to do with its use in the Mongolian archery technique.
Title: Re: Where's Wally? Part VI

Okay... this is at the train station in Hailar (aka Hulun Buir) in Hailar District which is a the northern part of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR). IMAR is part of China and the clue was the Chinese characters on the fountain. IMAR is home to the "Mongol" lifestyle, but is part of China ... Chinese currency is used there. It really is just a Chinese province but with more powers than the other provinces.

Mongolia (the republic aka Outer Mongolia) is a country with its own government, language and currency. Th Mongolian written language uses Cyrillic (i.e. the Russian) script even though it has been adapted to the Mongol language. To us it looks like Russian, but is not. The reason for doing this (in 1932 I think) was that the original written characters of the Mongol language was very difficult to learn.

Okay JimA, you gave it a good try so it's now over to you. ;)

Cheers!

Clive

Austria? Salzburg or Graz?

Nope again. So near, and yet so far! I am not sure what clues I can give, without making it too easy

Guesses have circled the country, but not yet ventured over the border.
It is in the far south of the country and not near the capital, but is one of the countries tourist destinations.
I bought a very nice 1956 308U Bakelite radio in one of the shops there. I guess that doesn't help much, although the radio was made by a company from this country.

the radio is a Tesla 408U and I believe he was Czechoslovakian although a quick Google suggests they were made by Phillips

Tesla was an extraordinary character who held patents which covers just about everything electrical you own; read a biographu many years ago - The man who invented the 20th Century  but I digress

Unesco world heritage sites in czexh republic includes Český Krumlov which appears to have that sort of church

 according to Wiki

A slight majority of the languages in the world are tonal However, most Indo-European languages, which include the majority of the most widely spoken languages in the world today, are not tonal

Chinese is a tonal language but so is Bantu

Looks Asian to me and I assume thats a big river so lets guess at the Mekong ?

I think it's Alum Bay, from the Needles.

My memory of the view is while on a RIB doing ~ 30knots as part of a friends stag do. We had just been completely soaked coming back from the far side of the Needles (when the RIB nose-dived into a large wave) :-)

Correct. I am doubly impressed in that you both identified it correctly, and that you managed to remember it after seeing it from a rapidly moving vehicle while on a stag do. :-)

It is in the UK, and you can see the sea from here.

It is not usually thought of as a Stately Home, but it could be argued that it has been used as one!

Ok,

I can tell its PAR 4 from the background so holes 3,6,7,8,9,11,15 and 16 are in play.

I am about to say that it may be hole 15.

However, I don't know how to read the charts, but if some one does, then the numbers at the back surely means something.

Not really you can determine what golf event it is from the fact it is in the UK and who the main sponsor is.  From that you can find the location and course and then other information in the picture will enable you to find the correct hole!  And just a little extra help it was from this year.  :)

Fud- that's unfair! This is an image that only golfers can identify- which flipping holes are you talking about anyhow :-[
Stef.

In interest of getting the event moving, I kept searching more and more in the internet.

Like I said in the previous post I believe it is PAR 4 the first number. The second and third most likely mean distance to hole depending how good you are.

So using the above I narrowed it to hole 13 (on the west course) Hole 15  (on the edinburgh course).

All of this found at http://www.wentworthclub.com/hole/30/

FUD if you have other website that include golf courses maps and descriptions it would be most welcome!

Unfortunately, the wenworth home page does not offer distance in m. Only in yards. This is the best I can do.

Yep - The BMW logo tells you that it was the BMW PGA Championship on the West Course at Wentworth.  The 5 at the end of the hole length and the fact that is a par 4 tells you that it is the third hole as it is the only par 4 on the course with the 5 at the end of the yardage.

So over to you Panoramix

No it is not a bow and arrow shooting place but it is a place where sports are played.

I mean, I could have gone bunkers with it and request time, date and angle used to take the picture.

Asia? China? Forbidden city? Palace of the last emperor?
Stef.

The forbidden city in Beijing indeed. It was perhaps not so difficult altough the name of the building (in English) is somewhat different but it is similar to the palace of the last emperor.

Here's the explanation behind it:

The sloping ridges of building roofs are decorated with a line of statuettes lead by a man riding a phoenix and followed by an imperial dragon. The number of statuettes represents the status of the building — a minor building might have 3 or 5. The Hall of Supreme Harmony has 10, the only building in the country to be permitted this in Imperial times. (Source: Wiki - a pretty accurate one this time)

Obviously by creating this mirror image that is exactly what I had in mind taking this shot.

Over to Stef!

This sturdy sculpture shows the King seated on horseback in a resolute but relaxed pose, with his horse reined in. The horse's stance, with arched neck and curved-in tail, is particularly characterful. When the bronze was restored, not only dirt but also layers of protective black and yellow paint and even car primer had to be removed from it (see Sharpe). These bear witness to earlier efforts to preserve the sculpture in its unusually exposed waterfront location. The details of the King's features and his regalia can now be seen more clearly.

Good bit of googling Clive - I was going to put up a picture of just the building (which is the Port of Liverpool building ) but decided to put the view with the statue with title in to make it easier but obviously made it too easy :)

As soon as you confirmed it was in the UK, it only took about 4 minutes to find on Bing images. (Mr. Google and i have had a falling out!! Long story. :P )

Okay gang ... I will look for one specific Wally image BUT ... if someone is itching to post a Wally image please go ahead!! I am running out of places. Please feel free to post a "Where's Wally" picture before me.

Anyone?

I have an evil image in mind, but it is a slide and my old travel slides are in disarray. ;)
