Title: The Grand Black-and-White Photo Narrative
Post by: Clive on April 30, 2013, 03:54:34 PM
There has been discussion about a black and white thread here at DD.

So I'll start this off.

Let's see your black and white photos.

Really like the tree roots Kurt. Interesting shot of the lichen too.

I was walking yesterday and saw this old tree bleached by the sun. It is probably a limber pine or white pine with gnarly branches created by wind.

The dark hills in the back were under cloud shade and the foreground green hill was under sunshine. I darkened the dark hills for contrast.

Very nice Clive and Rannari. Some great conversions. The toning on the lichen is fantastic. And then the old tree Clive, I have a thing for knarly dead trees, so I love this, nice lighting. (I am not sure why :) )

Not sure about other countries but here in Melbourne the real estate sales folk would advertise this as a "Renovator's Delight".
It was nice to see that the fly screens over the louvre windows were intact though !
It was taken at Point Nepean- the old quarantine station.

I don't often do the B/W thing but thought these might suit a conversion.

On of the local pubs is being knocked down. There are so many in the village and this one is non central and so was not frequented enough.

Since the non-smoking laws and the recession most pubs are struggling. We rarely 'went to the pub' and go even less now.  In facte rarely drink as it's very expensive.

However..............this poor pub was the one I met Mr W in - or to be more precise the place where I first 'allowed' him to 'court me' 15 1/2 years ago ;) We were married withing 4 months!

I digress - this is what remained of the pub this weekend and today it is mostly rubble.

BTW - I've enjoyed looking at all your images!

These images are stitches as I had to reach right over the wire fences that enclose the demolition site. That moveable live view screen is very handy ;)

Ditto!  The expression on the cyclist and the way the DOF highlights it is great.

Not to exclude the others, of course :)

It's good to think what may look good as a B/W conversion and something I don't think about/do too often. I suppose in the days of B/W film we thought more about exposure and impact?

Thanks John!

The first one is a sort of flower 'Echinops exaltatus' (don't know the name in english), which has a perfect circle structure. Some white vignetting and touch of sepia ...

The second one was taken at the river where was hundreds of water striders (correct?) and the sun was reflecting nicely from water surface. Added some 'softness' ...

Both with 135mm STF.

Easby Abbey  - North Yorkshire. The remains of one of Henry VIII's 'dissolution of the monasteries' victims when he fell out with the Catholic church and wanted to divorce his first wife.
As far as 'ordinary people' were concerned it was a bad move - the monasteries used to be hospitals and a refuge for the poor.

Some great stuff here but no one has posted for a while, I thought I'd have a go at a re-boot

I like the first as the bride and groom are well posed, unfortunately the background is not really conducive to making a good wedding photo. So the second or last it must be. The last has difficult lighting, so you did well to capture it as you did. All are very good actually.

I agree with Charles's comments but second one for me.  My only niggle is the end of the glass panel on the right- the line is distracting. You cannot crop it though (unless you move the coffee cup a little  )

thanks AScot and chappo1, 'appreciate the feedback, the bride in the first shot is my daughter, (proud dad alert) I caught this while photographer was setting up his shot, I don't know how his turned out because my daughter only showed us the ones that she liked, AScot, I cannot tell a lie, I used a fair bit of creative dodging and burning to help out the difficult lighting in the last one ;) I was tempted to leave the superman symbol in colour but not really fussed on that effect, and that coffee cup :( what can I say :)

First one- Almost too much to look at here.
To me there are two images here crop to just above the arch and have the juxtaposition of trees and buildings plus then crop just above the top of the bridge and put a person/dog/ just beyond the arch.

second one
Nice use of light and shade- good use of mono

Third one
I can see what you are trying to achieve with blend of new and old but for me the curved one is too dominant.

4- I like it lots.  Best one and the solitary figure conveys loneliness to me

5 would be better if the figure was closer in the foreground but otherwise well seen

thanks John, it's nice to hear how another photographer sees your work, the forth image was captured through a bus window, he looked just as lonely in real life.

cheers, Mark

First one for me as I like integration of sky and land better.

By the way- if anyone notices that the thread looks different, I have gone through and removed the posts where the original poster has removed the linked image.  It makes no sense to have comments on a non existant image.....john

I know it's subjective but to my eyes the creative dodging and burning is just a little bit too heavy handed, although in saying that the first would be my pick as i prefer the clouds in that shot.

Once again thanks for the feedback, the first is my favourite of the two also, Good idea John, much better, Chris82 no dodging or burning was used in either image, although I'm not at all against it, 😜

Cheers, Mark

I've posted the colour version of these in another thread so thought i'd stick the mono versions here.

I do not remember what I picked in the colour versions Chris but last one for me here.
It has the nicest balance of foreground middle ground and background and the eye is pulled through it....john
