Aha! JimA is correct. Wild oats.

Over to you JimA.

There is an expression "Sow some wild oats." Meaning "to do wild and foolish things in one's youth." In the case of male-type guys it is not clear when we stop being classed as "youth." ;) I'm working' on it.

This is a nasty weed in wheat fields ... especially seed fields ... because that awn (see hint = yawnnnnnn) does not come off and prevents the oats from being cleaned out when the seed is cleaned with machines in a cleaning plant. Now the interesting part...see the second picture where the awn is twisted? Here's what happens when the seed falls to the ground in a field...when it gets wet the spiral part of the awn unwinds and the light-colored part of the awn acts as a lever and the seed actually "drills" itself into the soil.  There are some species of native grasses on the dry prairies that do the same thing.)

It looks like a spline to transfer drive from one shaft to another - but what the spline is on I have no idea!

No, it is not a spine line. Yes it can be used to transfer, however I have said too much!

looks like rubber either the side of a shoe or a grip on something like a lens

No sir, it is not made of rubber, it is not a grip of any kind, and it is not definitely part of a lens.

Let me summarize the clues so far

If eaten you get food poisoning.
It is not edible

It may be used to transfer.... but not in electronic genre (at least in the form I have the object)
