This is a very common object. Can't live with them but can't live with out them either.
 

(and no it is not an A-900 special edition with a 70-400g in silver)

Well I have stared at it several times over the last couple of days hoping to be hit by inspiration, but I am still no wiser, even with the clues!

No, it is not a rain drop. It is not a girl (although I ponder more than 2 days if we could live without girls.....) then my wife called me to dinner and realized that I that really you can't live with out them..

Just to clarify the 1800's remark refers to all objects of this kind.

Further clues. The image is the top part of this piece. This is an item that can be purchased at any convenience kiosk or store. Retail value say 1.00 (dollar/euro/sterling)...
