It was a nice one :). I think it is only too easy if you are slightly obsessive about the subject matter, yieks, err, i mean it was very very hard and just pure chance that it came to me ;)

Not a brain (although we did have access to a hand once Rob :) ) not a tortoise nor a terrapin and not the foot or pad of anything :), The pic is a slight crop from 1:1. It is supposed to look like stone and that is reflected in its name...

When I was a lad, my mum had a book about succulent plants, and I recall some of them were known as living stones. A Google search agreed with the rest of your clue!

At the weekend I was trying out a bellows unit I got from eBay. Here's one of the results (I removed the shocking amount of sensor grime!):
