# of posts = year
« on: September 29, 2008, 02:22:23 PM »
I just saw my post count in another thread, and it was 1979 posts since I first joined. It's not a milestone I'm celebrating, but the fact that 1979 meant something to me... Hmm... Oh yeah! The year my brother was born. However, now, I'll be higher in the post count. Anyways, look at the number of posts you've made (when viewing another thread), and think of something that happened in that year, or just google that number and see what comes up! I've just done it. The Bee Gees and disco reigned that summer!

EDIT: Note: If your number of posts is beyond 2008 (or whatever the year is now) make it up, but somehow based upon what the previous person has said. Below, I said in 1991 the Dangerous Dogs Act was passed, so, the next person could say that in 4622 the Dangerous Daleks Act was passed... or anything, or look into the tea leaves in your tea cup and make a Nostradamous-like prediction.

In the year 986 Earth science Bjarni Herjolfsson, sailing from Iceland to Greenland, gets lost and sights the Americas, but does not land

In the year 987 Astronomy At Chichen Itza in Yucatán, Mexico, an observatory is built to measure the risings and settings of Venus and the Sun.

1991, year of the sheep, the (first) Gulf War was on, and the UK passed the Dangerous Dogs Act.

If my tardis history is correct, I think Fother, the year 4622 was when the Dangerous Daleks Act was passed in the Shadow Proclamation. That was also the time of the Great, Great, Great Depression in America, and so the police had to patrol on foot, with watering cans, and long plastic sticks with plastic knives attached to the end... hence your picture ;)

Not in all states, as far as I know, but they have been in Melbourne (Victoria) for some time.

that amazes me, only one county in one state alows brothels in america, it is just out sideof las vegas, and i think they only allow it as it is the county's main form of revenue and to keep alittle of the old sin city alive

Sentimental value, right? ;)

(2001, Space Odyssey, a film from 1968; and the year when the term "Al Quada" was first used, in a trial where the FBI were attempting to try Osama Bin Laden in absentia for the American-Kenyan embassy bombing... that was apparently in February... Anyone else see that documentary, "The Power of Nightmares"?

1710 seems to be a fairly boring year - the major items in wikipedia are
The world's first copyright legislation, Britain's Statute of Anne, becomes effective
Estimation: Beijing becomes the largest city of the world, taking the lead from Istanbul

However did find this on one of Londons most photographed landmarks ST Paul's Cathedral

Quote
Throughout the 35 years it took to build the Cathedral, Wren personally supervised the work, even when it meant being hauled up in a basket during the later stages. He engaged the finest craftsmen, scrutinised and signed the accounts and visited the site every week. The construction work was carried out under such secrecy that parts of the building were continually under wraps. A tax was put on coal coming to the Port of London to cover the total costs of the building work which amounted to £738,845. Standing over 355 feet in height the Cathedral is constructed from stone that was chosen for its good carving and weathering qualities brought all the way from the royal quarries on the Isle of Portland in Dorset. Conflict with Parliament was always a problem for Wren and in 1697 they suspended half of his salary when they believed work was progressing too slowly. Although the first service was held in 1697, work was to continue for a further thirteen years.
