Help Loading Photos - I'm confused
« on: August 22, 2011, 04:24:21 PM »
Apologies, recently bought an A700 (my first DSLR) and have been out happily snapping away - but would now like some critique on some of the pictures I've taken to learn where I can improve for the future (yes I really am that new and green to all this so very keen to learn). And recently new to Dynax as well - what a great knowledge base!

Have been reading about uploading pictures - I've got the bit about 200k max and 800 pixels but how on earth do I get my pictures that size in one hit - I'm lost as each thread I've looked at seems to have links to other threads, which is fine, but sometimes I'm finding I'm going full circle and back to square 1, just come from a different route! Or the conversation goes off into using Elements? or Photoshop (which I don't have). I can't seem to find the definitive "this is how you re-size your photo's thread" (maybe I'm just being dim).

Is there a simple way I can re-size my photos please (I've been shooting in JPEG) that some kind soul can point me at using Paint, as that is all that I have available to me to do this! I know how to resize images using paint to get under 200k max, but how on earth can I tell if they are 800 pixels max????

All help appreciated, thank you in advance.  Operating system in Win7.

How about opening a free Picasa account?  You can resize there to 800 on the LONG side and post from there to here.  Plus you can keep a full size version of your photo and another at 800.

I would also advise getting some better software than Paint - which is extremely limited in it's options.

If cost is an issue, try The GIMP which is a free image manipulation program, and can do much of what Photoshop can do, and will allow you to change both dimensions and disk size.

Hi Dave,

both pieces of advice above are good. Frankly Paint is not up to the task of photo editing at all. It's a drawing program, and far too limited to treat your photos with the respect they deserve!

The free software that came with your camera (on a CD) is far far superior, and other free alternatives like Gimp and picasa will also show your photos in much better light. Paid software such as lightroom, photoshop elements, etc go even further...

Welcome.  Good advice already.  I think you will find Picasa will meet your needs.  There is irfanview as well.  Also free.

Thanks all, appreciated. Indeed was onlyever going to use Paint to resize (for now) rather than use as a photo editor - Photoshop will come in time once I have a few pennies free! Just looked at Picassa, looks straightforward, and totally forgot about Irfanview, which I have used before on my previous PC.

So.....some resizing to do then I'll load up some photos for critique.......

Remember that once you have the images sized appropriately, you then need to upload them to a suitable hosting site (Such as your own website, Flickr, Smugmug, etc) and then link to them on Dynax Digital - you cannot 'upload' them to Dynax Digital.

Yes, I should have added that once you have Picasa, set up a Picasa Web Album, it's free too and from THERE, you can download to this or any other site.
