Android apps issue (now sorted)
« on: April 30, 2017, 11:08:09 AM »
On my Sony Xperia M4 Aqua phone, I wanted to download the face book update, but despite it only being 49mb, and having 465mb of free space on the phone, it would not download as I got the message saying that I needed to free up space.

I shut down apps  by using `Shut App`, and also cleared the cache, but still it would not download.

I had a message box come up saying what apps I had on the phone, and had to remove one of them.

why does this happen?

My phone only has 8gb of storage, 4.03gb used by android, 3+gb of app installed by Sony/google , many of which I wont ever use, and cant delete, which leaves me not a lot of space for apps, despite moving them across to an SD card.

thanks in advance

I hear you....

My iPhone is a 3G from 2007, that's how out of date I am in mobility. My Son gave it to me so that he and his sisters could call me and it is pay as I go, I am very cheep, no ridiculously expensive monthly contracts for me. Therefore, I cannot help either, Gordon.

Gordon,

I have this with both my phone and tablet.

Android appears to need 500-600 Mb free to be able to update an app as far as I can tell.

It also has a 'feature' (or is it a bug?) in that if you move an app to the SD card, next time it updates it will switch back to the main memory (so need to be transferred to SD again!).

It's this that I suspect is your issue - try going into the application manager and moving the larger apps to SD again. It should free up space, and let you update facebook (which will, of course, then need to be moved back to SD if you want it there!)

Hope this helps.

Gordon hasn't posted that my suggestion works yet, and we all know how fickle computers are

I've been working as a software developer since the early days of the IBM PC (pre Windows), and my approach is still one of 'try this, see if it works, if not, try the next option, repeat'

You are quite correct, but I was only aware that I needed 500mb+ of free space to do an OS upgrade, but obviously it appears that it applies to apps to.

I have managed to update the facebook app with less than 500mb free before, so that is what is confusing me.

I did manage to download and install a game this morning with 465mb free.

I too find that apps that I have moved to the SD card have to be moved back there after updating, I will have to have a root through all the apps on the phone and ditch the ones I don't want, I have removed the amazon app, as I wont shop via the phone, but it appears that it has been downloaded again and is waiting installation, so I fear I may have this with any other `preinstalled` app that I remove.

Will come back later about this.

Thanks again.

Glad to be able to help - the Application management in Android is a bit of a pain, it would be so much simpler if you could just specify where applications kept their data, and have that all on the SD card - that woudl free up space for more apps!

Anyway, one additional trick I have found is that you can 'Disable' pre-installed applications (take a bit of care here, and only do it with ones you know are stand alone), this uninstalls any updates and stops them trying to update, which can save a bit more space.

In an ideal world, the apps on the phone should be down to the individual who can select what he wants/needs, rather than being stuck with ones that others think he will want/need.

I have contacted Sony and Google about this, and suggested that if they are going to install heaps of stuff on the phones, then give the end user plenty of storage space, 8gb is no where near enough, it should be 16gb minimum, it cant cost much more to do that.

Finally took the plunge and uninstalled update for apps and then deleted them, I now have over 1gb of free space, thanks to all who took the time to help me.
