Matches and fire
« on: November 09, 2008, 09:11:03 AM »
I saw a pic on here a while ago of a match igniting and was blown away I have tried to recreate the shot with far less than satisfactory results.
Any tips on how to time the shot and settings required.
I tried with as fast a shutter speed as i could use set the timer and tried to strike the match at the right moment got a couple of shots almost timed right but there was no definition just a yellow blob of fire.

This one?

Lens: Minolta 100/2.8 Macro
Image Date: 2008:04:13 20:29:11
Flash Used: Yes (Manual)
Exposure Time: 0.0080 s (1/125)
Aperture: f/27.0
ISO equiv: 100
Exposure Bias: -3.00
Light Source: Flash
Metering Mode: Spot
Exposure: Manual

I used a ring flash for lighting (which helps to grab a shot moment in time), and the short cable remote for shutter release. The button on the shutter release has a 'lock' mode, and putting the camera in continuous (drive) mode, it shoots frame after frame, as fast as the flash re-cycles / as fast as the camera buffer allows.

Adjust the exposure to underexpose for the scene (so the flame is appropriately exposed and the background drops away)

Set that running, hold another (lit) match just out of frame below this one to trigger it, and there it goes
