Title: Getting moving objects sharp
Post by: retoohs on September 16, 2013, 08:59:29 AM
Ok have started using my new(sh) 80-200/2.8 and seem to be missing a lot of moving objects sharp. I figure its technique and would appreciate all input on settings and technique. Cheers

The problem could be depth of field if you are shooting wide open.

At f/2.8 you get fairly shallow DOF (how much depends on subject distance), so if, like me, you tend to have your camera set up for Single Shot AF (rather than continuous) and forget to change it, then in the time between getting a lock on the subject, and fully pressing the shutter, a moving subject can easily move to out of focus.

Thanks. Yes I am shooting at 2.8 or 3.2 and just checked my camera and it is set to single, I always forget about changing this setting, so used to just shooting landscapes. Will get out today and try on continuous.

Try all that has been suggested above. I you still have problems and you use a camera that has lens micro adjustment (A850, A900, A77 and A99 and possibly some others) check that out.

As Ascot says if the camera has AF micro adjustment is a must for this type of lens. Also try to work if is a77 with Group focus point or center single point. Don't rely on wide area

Thanks both, I printed out a test chart today and will check it tomorrow. Hopefully it is as simple as that. I have a 50/1.4 minolta lens I need to check also. Appreciate your help. Alan
