The reasom why I am asking is because I have concerns over the sensor overheating.

having done my first bulb exposure with theA700 the manual does say that you can do a 4 1/2 hour exposure on a full battery so I think as far as Sony are concerned the length of bulb exposures is only limited by the battery power.  Not sure if you would need the VG with 2 batteries to get the noise reduction as well at 4 1/2 hours

In his book "The Complete Guide to Sony's Alpha 700 DSLR", Gary Friedman says that he has used his a700 for long exposures in excess of 4-1/2 hours.  The length was limited by the battery.  Gary does not have or use a vertical control grip, so it must be from a single battery.

Nope, he specifically said that the length of his bulb exposure had been limited only by his battery dying.  He also stated that vertical grips are great for some people, but that he didn't like having to learn the buttons in two directions (they are close, but different).
