A700 loooooooooooooooooooooooong exposures
« on: February 01, 2008, 09:22:48 PM »
Can anyone please tell me what is the longest exposure you have used and do you have DRO switched off.

This may seem like a silly question, but I have just got mine and would love some `user` feedback for future reference.

When set on 'Bulb', you can hold the shutter open indefinetly. This was about 7 to about 15 seconds, though longer is possible.

The reasom why I am asking is because I have concerns over the sensor overheating.

Stef and Clive have been baiting eachother and one of them has done 20mins and i think clive is going to do a 40 min exp this weekend.

So i dont think there's much to worry about.

DRO is turned off on mine

Thanks Rob.

I have taken 2 pictures inside without flash with the ISO set at 400.

The exposure looks good and the big screen sure is clear, makes me wonder how I managed before.

More play time needed to experiment though.

Gordon,

The thread below this one has lots of talk ... Stef is the leader so far...;)
http://www.dynaxdigital.com/index.php?topic=4495.0

I can't do anything until it warms up. It gives me seem ideas, but probably will have to wait until spring.

The longest I've tried is 5 minutes.

Cheers!

Clive

Yep! Tonight is the night! 40 min exposure with DRO on- so that makes an overall exposure of 80 min -see the other thread: http://www.dynaxdigital.com/index.php?topic=4495.msg32333;topicseen#new
I do know that Martin Evening has done a 2 hours exposure...well I do 40 min tonight and will post the images tom. in the other thread and THEN it's Clive's turn with 80 min!!!! HIHI- let's see whose camera blows up first ;)

having done my first bulb exposure with theA700 the manual does say that you can do a 4 1/2 hour exposure on a full battery so I think as far as Sony are concerned the length of bulb exposures is only limited by the battery power.  Not sure if you would need the VG with 2 batteries to get the noise reduction as well at 4 1/2 hours

A question that I keep forgetting to ask is, after a long exposure wheter its many seconds or minutes, does the image show instantly on the LCD, or is there a delay, ie on the 7D you seem to have to wait almost as long as the exposure to see results.

And is there still the interval function on the A700?

Cheers

I'm finding the same with my a700 that after exposures of several seconds I have to wait nearly as long again for it to process the shot. I assume this is normal but I'm sure someone else will be able to confirm this. I've only gone up to about 20 secs so far.

It's not 'almost as long' it's exactly as long. The camera's noise reduction mode kicks in, taking an identical time exposure to create a noise 'map' which is then placed over the original frame and used to eliminate (well, minimise) noise.

It can be turned off via the menu system, if you prefer to. :)

Ok thanks for that.  Its something to remember when I get my A700.  I forgot about the noise reduction process.

Strange, mine is set to ON, yet when i was out the other day, the images showed on the lcd display instantly, this was with th IR filter and 2-3 min exposures ???

Rob

Edit :   Have just tried again, seems to make no differance to the length of exposure whether the Long exp NR is on or off Hmmnnnnnn ???

Edit Again : Just read the manual, and it says
"Noise reduction is not performed on continuous shooting or continuous bracketing even when it is set to on"

That will explain it then !
