What did I do wrong?
« on: March 29, 2017, 12:03:52 AM »
Here is the situation. I wanted to photograph hummingbirds. Set the camera on manual focus, manual exposure ( which I knew to be correct from past experience with film ). I used camera's fill flash to trigger a more powerful flash unit by a slave. When I took the picture the camera screen displayed an error message. I immediately feared I had ruined the camera and turned it off without reading the error message. Apparently no damage was done as it works properly. I don't know why my plan didn't work. Any explaination? Thanks.

Without knowing the error message (and camera) it's difficult to offer any constructive advice.

You can occasionally get a problem if the lens is almost (but not quite) mounted properly, so the contacts don't relay information between camera and lens properly every time.

Do you have any more details, or even some idea of the message displayed?

Don't know about the camera error message, but when you say 'trigger ... by a slave', you need to make sure the slave can ignore the pre-flash the camera flash sends out, otherwise the flash will fire before the shutter opens.

There's been some chat about flash for hummingbirds over on Dyxum: http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/how-to-use-flash-at-high-shutter-speed_topic125070_post1479957.html#1479957, and a link to an article.
Not that I'm trying to make you defect to another forum or anything ... :-)
