Variable ND Filter

I am looking at these and wonder if anyone uses them and how they perform.

Bought one a few years ago.  I found with the one I got it was fine when starting to go darker.  Then when getting close to maximum you would get a lighter spot appearing in the final image.
Not sure if this affects all or if this was due to the cheap ebay version I bought.

I have one too but have used it once or twice only.
I am rather conflicted.  I do not like the idea of a filter holder on the camera so thought I would go with a variable screw on one.  It works but I am not really a landscape photographer so it has only had a couple of outings....... john
