Smart Teleconverter
« on: July 31, 2008, 03:02:38 AM »
Just purchased the a350 and was wondering how the smart converter works. I have tried how manual states and can not get it to work. Am I suppose to see the actual zoom increase in the LCD display?  I have held button in while taking a photo and I don't see any difference in the results..Can it be used under auto mode>???    Thanks for any help

Hi and welcome to the forum Buckmaster!

Smart Teleconverter only works in 'Live View' mode.  First frame your shot and then press the smart-tele button once to get 1.4X or a second time to get 2X.  In both instances, you should get a zoomed-in image on your LCD with the zoom setting displayed too, i.e., 1.4X or 2X.  Then all you have to do is press the shutter-release button to take the picture.  IMPORTANT - do not keep pressing the 'zoom' button continuously - just a single (1.4X) and perhaps a second (2X) press will do the trick!  Its just like using any other mode or function button on the camera.

Good luck and let us know what you think of the results.

Chris ;)

The smart teleconverter doesn't work if you are saving in raw and jpeg, and possibly not in raw mode.

Watch the screen, when you press the button the subject should jump in size (it does on the A300 anyway!). Press it again, and it then hits the 2x level.

Thanx Guys,  I got it to work...  Manual didn't state that you had to be in jpg setting to use
smart converter..  Works good, but have another question,, I am looking to, when I get alot better taking photos, to have some photos blown up to around 20" x 24" size and was wondering if, with using the smart converter, will be using enough megapixel to do so.. Someone posted that by using "ST", that by cropping you lose some MP"S..  anyone have any idea? I am using the A350.

Buckmaster,

I do not think that you would get good results printing to that size.  Remember, using smart teleconverter means that the camera is zooming in to the centre of the frame and cropping out the edges of the picture.  You end up with a smaller file and less MPs than a standard 14MP shot, too few pixels to print large.

To print at that size, you definitely need to use a full 14MP shot if you want to retain sharpness and limit noise.  The shots from using the smart teleconverter facility are fine for internet postings and for viewing on this forum, where you are going to post a smaller picture anyway.  The user manual quotes the file-sizes/MPs for each of the modes, i.e., 1.4X and 2X, so you may get an idea of the final quality of your pictures.

Hope this helps!

Chris ;)

This sounds a bit like a 'digital zoom', poor quality, which is why I chose to stick with SLRs.

i would say it sounds like to me that you would be better off picking up a copy of elements and cropping "the old fasioned way"
The first step is admitting you have a problem.
