Replacement for 5D
« on: February 15, 2015, 12:30:43 PM »
Just out of curiosity I am posting this to see what your thoughts are.  Yesterday I went to a camera shop to get my broken 5D written off for insurance purposes and get a letter stating what the replacement would be.

The guy said that an A65 was the right replacement from the current Sony line up which was a little frustrating as it was a little less money than I was hoping for but I accepted his position and justification that it was a mid range camera and the one I was hoping he would quote (the A77ii) was a pro/high range camera.  As many of you know I already bought the A77ii so it doesnt affect what I will go for in terms of camera just a very small change in the money coming from the insurance company (max pay out £500).

So when I got home I went onliine to look at prices of the A65 out of curiosity only to find that no one seemed to stock it, after futher investigation I turned up what most of you prpbably know and that is that its a discontinued model.  The guy in the shop (I wont mention names but they are a national chain) happened to have an A65 in stock and my thoughts are that he was just hoping he would get rid of it on me.  So in light of the fact that the A65 is no longer available to buy would you agree that the logical replacement for a 5D would be an A77ii even though its not an aexact match and is in fact a step up.... there doesn't seem to be a mid range replacement in the Sony arsenal at the moment?

Cheers

Hi Nick

If your insurance company did a replacement camera rather than giving you the money then it would be down to them to decide which cameras would be the nearest for the 5D.

Sony keep changing their range of products - cameras especially as far as we are/I am concerned - extremely quickly. To answer your question is maybe impossible to get the a77ii as the answer :)

Some people may say that the 5000 or 6000 type range could be the replacements for the 5D? But you could argue that the lens mount is different and you wouldn't be able to use your existing A mount lenses!

Some members have these and are very pleased with them.

Frank,

Insurance company just want a recommendation as to what the replacement is so they know what price to give me for the settlement?

Just thought it was odd that the camera shop would recommend a camera that is no longer current?

Nick

Okay... that surprises me based on my own experience with insurance companies. I have had them decide the replacement item or monetary value if I decided the replacement wasn't suitable.

I would suggest you asking some of the other photography companies as well as the first one. They should be more use to offering such quotations. Companies such as Calumet Photographic etc.

Good for you!!

You're gonna LOVE that A77II.... SERIOUSLY!!

Buy the Gary Friedman ebook to ease your transition. That book is worth TWICE it's value and will give you everything you need to operate your new camera like a pro. ;)

Well I have come to an agreement with the company writing the letter to write off my 5D to say that they recommend a A600 which is at £549 so thats a win... I have Wex and Calumet writing letters to say that they recommend an A77ii.  So that's all good news

Well I claimed for mine on my travel insurance, I dropped it and it stopped working.  If you dropped yours and it stopped working you should be able to claim on the house insurance or if you were away at the time travel insurance.
