Got an error message "no lens attached" with my regular Sony18-300 lens on my Sony Alpha 100 body after camera had worked fine for over a year.  A liberal spraying of "Blow Off Duster" on the male and female contact points on the lens and body solved the problem.

hi I have just treated myself to to a200 because i was told that I could use my old minolta lens on it unfortunatly my old lens had the wrong size bayonet so I brought an adapter to the right size. but now I'm recieving a no lens message and I cannot find a way round it. I have tried setting camera to manual focus but with no avail I'm now stuck. could not afford a dearer model as I'm a Pensioner so this was a major but for me anyway. any ideas would be most grateful.

Welcome Dorothy- good to have you here! Somewhere in your menu of the camera there should be a setting that allows you to use non Sony lenses and also older ones. I think it is release without lens attached. Have a look at the top of this thread. Perhaps somebody can correct me but please have a look? Good luck!

Welcome to the forum Dorothy. I posted this earlier and although it was for a different camera, it may work on yours.

I am not sure if the A200 has the correct menu option, if not then you must switch your camera to M, using the little switch next to the lens mount at the front. See page 71 of your manual. Hope this helps. :)

Hi thanks you for all your help I have at last got my lens working I found that i had to set the lens to manual focus and also the camera setting to m on the top of the camera. This has also worked with a 3x converter  bringing my 200mm vivitar lens up to 600mm which i hope will bring my photographing wild life a lot better

Sorry this message is so late, but I just had to reply since my Sony 18-70 mm kit lens was reporting the same error message. The fix I used is a little extreme, so please bear with me. After trying the qtip and cleaning solution method on the brass contacts to no avail, I got a little more radical and used a small amount of emery cloth on the contacts. After my lens was sitting idle for about a year, I figured, what the heck I'll either fix it or completely trash it. Eureka! the emery cloth worked and my lens performs flawlessly. Apparently, there was a fair amount of oxidation on the contacts and the fine grit of the emery cloth was enough to "resurface" it and enable it to make contact again. If you've tried everything else and other lenses work fine on the camera, give this method a try. Just don't get too aggressive with the emery cloth. Thanks.

Hi guys. Newbie here. Very interested to read Dean's note re his experiment with emery paper. He must have surgeons hands I reckon! I've got the same problem with an a300 and its stock 18-70 lens. I'm going to try some stuff called "Deoxit" a liquid "cleaner" which fixes oxidised contacts. Apparently this stuff cured a similar problem that some Nikon D300 users had (comms problem between lens and body). If anyone's interested I'll post how I get on. If that doesn't work then I guess a good shot a brandy and a go with emery paper is what I'll have to try next!
Regards,
Ed

As this message can appear on a nearly new camera with a new Sony lens in the middle of a photo session, (ie immediately after having taken a perfectly good picture), it possibly has more to do with a software error detection fault than an actual physical fault. It usually but not always clears by releasing and re-fixing the lens, sometimes by switching on and off and occasionally both are required. Nearly 19.5 thousand views would tend to indicate a widespread manufacturer's problem.

.

This topic was first started on June 11, 2008, that is the main reason it has nearly 19.5 thousand views. Not because of a widespread manufacturer's problem.

This problem can happen with any Sony, Canon, Nikon Etc. camera due to a lot of new camera owners trying to use non AF lenses, 3rd party lenses or totally incompatible lenses.

As I said in the original post it also happens with a brand new Sony lens in the middle of a shoot, hence my conclusion that there is a problem with the detection sensitivity set by the manufacturer. Either way it is not an acceptable scenario that any camera arbitrarily decides it does not like the lens in the middle of a shoot or any other time.
