NO LENS ATTACHED - ERROR MESSAGE
« on: June 11, 2008, 05:19:41 PM »
The other day I received this message after trying to take a picture and nothing happened.  Has anyone else gotten this error message and if so do you know what could be causing it.

What make of lens did you have attached?

I had this error message when I attached a Sigma lens to my a700... although the lens worked fine when attached to my Minolta 7000 SLR.

IF it was a "none Sony/Minolta" lens then you need to change a setting in the menu. "Shutter release without lens" or something like that... there is a list for error messages in the owners manual near the back.

Hope that may help solve your problem if it's based around using a none Sony/Minolta lens.

Might not have been completely screwed in ???
Stef.
P.S. When you are attaching another brand you don't have to change a setting (I never had to). This setting Frank is referring to is particularly important for cleaning the sensor (I think)

i think you also need to use it when you are using a manual lens
The first step is admitting you have a problem.

Before we get too confused, there are two types of lenses, ones that work and ones that dont fully work.

Examples of ones that work are sony AF, minolta AF, and most tamron/tokina/sigma A-mount AF.

Then there are the ones that dont fully work, , genreally manual focus but that can be made to fit with an adaptor, such as some m42, zenitar etc and ones that do fit, are AF and dont work like some (few) of the older Sigma and tamron that need re-chipining and are generally over about 15 years old.

If you are getting the error it should happen with the second lot, but shouldnt happen with the first lot.

If it happens with a lens that should work then your mount may be badly fitting, and reattaching the lens may help. You know a bit like screwing it in further, but not really, it should just give a nice click.

If you are using one of the other lenses or a damaged one of the lenses that should be fully compatible then somewhere in the menue funciton you can turn off the option to get the camera to confirm a propper lens is fitted. It is called something like shutter on no lens, but is different on different cameras of course.

Page 159 of the user manual, warning messages, for the a700;

"No lens attached, shutter is locked"
[Release w/oLens] is set to [Disable]

Attach a lens. When attaching the camera to an astronomical telescope or something similar, set it to [Enable] in the Custom Menu.

When I first got my a700 it worked fine with my old Minolta glass and the Sony kit lens... but not with any Sigma until I changed this setting. I onbly found out about it when it was mentioned in another thread on the forum soon after I joined.

Mea culpa- sorry Frank. I am probably wrong and had set my camera to this right at the beginning so would not know when I attached my Sigmas/Tamrons.

No probs Stef :)

Apologies if I came across strong... wasn't intended :-[

I tried an old Sigma lens on a Sony a100 down at PC World - had found the a100 was being replaced with the a200 so didn't want to buy it   just check if the Sigma would fit/attach to it, which it did. However as the a100 wasn't switched on I didn't know the error message would have displayed ???

I only got that message when I got the a700 and tried the same Sigma lens... it fitted and clicked nicely in to place only to give the error message when I switched on... oh! bugger :( "By chance" [ordained?] someone here mentioned this error and the !answer to the problem" was posted, I tried it and... voila it worked :D

Mind... it doesn't mean that the warning message I've given above is the exact same message that CUBANSTINGER is getting...

Hadn't realised that this is in the Dynax/Maxxum 7 DSLR area... therefore the information/suggestion quite possibly has no bearing on the problem :-[

The a700 has different wording and location in the menus I believe. However the basic suggestion to turn off the lens recognition will often allow the 7D to use a lens without AF (manually).

When the 7D came out first a guy posted a thread describing how he removed the camera mount and contacts from a lens and bodged it to an older sigma to make it work. He killed two lens to get the sigma working on manual and posted a long thread showing what he'd done. The second reply to this epic was Menu - > [Release w/oLens] is set to [Disable]. I was crying with laughter (-:

Would anyone know of the menu commands for this for a KM Dynax 7D please. I'm trying to attach a spotting scope and get this error message.

I'm sure you have set the camera to MF on the front of the camera, if not try it.
See page 52 and 53 in the dreaded Instruction Manual !!
Hope this will help.

See page 97 of the manual under shutter lock at bottom of the page.

OR.

Go to the custom menu, choose the cog icon, page #3. First item is Shutter Lock. ensure that it is turned off (default is on) to connect a telescope, microscope or any non auto focus lens or non Minolta mirror lens.

Good luck.
