Hey Need help with my Sony A100 + HVL F36AM flash
« on: October 06, 2009, 07:47:53 PM »
Hi Everyone

I am just new to photography (been doing videography for about a year now) and Im really starting to have with photos!

I recently pulled out my add on Flash, and I want to use it Wirelessly. However whenver I use that option on my camera, I have to open the ON CAMERA flash, and therefore the On Camera flash goes off as well as the other one wirelessly.

I only want the F36AM flash to go off via wireless, NOT the on camera one.. does anyone know what setting I would need for my A100 in order to archive this?

Thanks in advance!

Rishi

Welcome to the forum blackout2009 :)

You need to use the one camera flash to trigger it wirelessly - that's how they work.

The on board flash will have little or no effect on the image (it doesn't emit a full flash, just a brief pulse to communicate with the wireless unit). If it really bothers you though, a piece of processed film can be placed across the on board flash to hide it. It still needs to be raised though.

The flash coming from the actual camera itself is far too strong.  To prove this I took a picture of a mirror

notice how when i hit flash, i get a full burst out of the oncamera and wireless

That's exactly how it should work. Like Fother said you can use a exposed piece of film taped over the flash to emit it and still allow the IR to trigger the 36. You can usually ask a lab tech at any photo shop and they will usually give you a tail piece.
The on board really only aids in fill depending on the position of the 36 and is affective to 8-10 feet roughly.
