eye start on the 7d
« on: March 19, 2008, 10:01:42 AM »
do the 7d cameras have eye start and what exactly does it do?
The first step is admitting you have a problem.

Yes they do. The camera starts to focus when you raise it to your eye without waiting for you to half press the shutter. Hope this is correct.

Yep,
But its a pain in the rear, as the camera will keep trying to focus when youre walking along with itor its over your shoulder.

Mine was always off.

Could be useful for portraits though i guess ???

My 7D doesn't have the function to start focus when you bring the camera to the eye level.

It has only the function to switch on/off the rear LCD screen for example if you take pictures in continues mode then the camera doesn't show any picture even the last one if you dont remove your face from the sensor.

I believe TG is correct. The 7D has two eye sensors just below the viewfinder but it has no grip sensor to activate the eye start, nor does it have a switch to turn on these sensors and I am unable to find a menu item that will turn on the eye start, or any mention of it in the manual.

The film 7 had all these things and if you were not holding the grip, the eye start would not function. This system prevented the situation described by minolta mad of the camera trying to focus when you're walking along with it over your shoulder.

If anyone can tell me how to turn on eye start on the 7D, I would love to hear from them. On the film 7 it was a great feature, but on the 7D, without the grip sensor, it could be a problem.

I think the A700 has eye start, but it also has the grip sensor, unless you live in Europe. ???

Or have I got it completely wrong. :(

What AScot says is right. The Europe A700 version doesn't have the grip sensor and is not wellcome from Sony the decision to remove the sensor because of Nickel. There must be other materials to put insteat of Nickel.

But i like the eye start even without the grip sensor ( Preferable with)

The eye start, as implemented on the film 7 and the a700 is great, due to the grip sensor.

However to answer Dr.Theo's question, no! I do not think the 7D has Eye Start. The sensors under the viewfinder, although they look like eye start sensors are actually tied into the LCD monitor and under certain settings, will automatically turn off the monitor (I think). The manual is very vague on this feature, but nowhere can I find a reference to eye start. And I still cannot find any way to turn on eye start on the 7D, if it does exist. Can anyone help?

You are right Ascot,
I always thought that the 7D had eye start, but having just played with it, it doesnt and is as you say, its related to LCD and will turn it off when raisd to look through the viewfinder.
