alpha 300: can't download the photos from camera
« on: August 10, 2009, 11:07:03 AM »
Hi there. I have an Alpha 300 with a 16GB transcend compact flash (133x) card. I can take pictures on the camera, but when I go to connect the camera to my PC (via the USB cable) the PC cannot access the drive, and says it is not formatted when I click on it in My Computer. Obviously, I don't select the option to format the drive now!

None of the sony bundled software identifies the camera's card as being available: it just says no device connected. But in My Computer, the drive appears in the list, merely as an unformatted drive.

Anyone else had this issue? Should I have formatted the drive first or something?

I think I've used the card in a card reader (which I no longer have access to) and it worked then, I seem to recall (although it was a while ago...I can't say that for absolutely certain).

Any advice much appreciated. The card is not full by any means, but I'd like to get the photos off it!

Hi

Firstly welcome to the forum.

Secondly I think your best option is to get a card reader and try to retrieve the pictures before going any further. There are a number of free recovery tools available (if you need them) that work specifically with camera memory cards. I always use a card reader instead of connecting the camera to my PC so have no experience of connecting the camera directly.

Cheers,

Peter.

Hi Peter, thanks for the welcome and response!

Which free recovery tools do you recommend?

You might check and see if the USB connection option is set to mass storage.

Do you mean that it should be, or should not be? Either way, it doesn't access the data. (if I've got it set to PTP, when I plug it in, windows xp does recognise the camera, but still the software doesn't see the attached device)

Hi,

I don't know if these recovery applications will work using the camera directly. As follows:

PCInspector Smart Recover http://www.pcinspector.de/Sites/smart_recovery/info.htm?language=1
PiriForm Recuva http://www.recuva.com/
Smart FAT Recovery http://smartpctools.com/fat_recovery/
DiskDigger http://dmitrybrant.com/diskdigger

Obviously use them at your own risk.

Cheers,

Peter.

It needs to be set to mass storage. PTP is used for printing straight from camera.

Yes- you NEED to set in the camera menu the camera to mass storage or it will not be recognised!

Hi there. Even with the setting set to mass storage it did not read it. Since the initial problem, I was able to empty the card using a card reader. Now, with the card blank, I connected the camera to my PC again, and clicked OK to format the disk. Now the photos I take on the camera can be viewed via the PC cable, with the card being seen simply as a mass storage device.

Card reader didn't need the disk to be formatted, connecting with the card inside the camera did. Something to do with the 16gb size of the card maybe? Anyway, fixed now. Thanks for suggestions.

I have encountered the same situation as you. I connect my SD memory card to the computer and try to transfer some files to it. I copy a camera raw file to it, my SD card suddenly becomes inaccessible, and a window pop out to ask me to format the SD format. I can do nothing but format the card. After formatting, all the files on it are lost, but the card can now used a removable disk again.

I download a photo recovery software to successfully retrieve back some of my important photos.

Even the best point and shoot digital camera sometimes have this issue. From my experience, it always starts on the SD card.

The SD Card must be formatted in camera after the camera is set to mass storage. The formatting sets the necessary Sony Files and folders. Do not format the SD card in a computer as the camera will not be able to write to it. This applies to all Sony Alpha cameras including F.F, APSC, A-mount and FE-mount. Sony supplies a program that allows Windows, IOS etc to read Sony RAW files.

BTW, this is an old post dating back to August 10, 2009. We haven't had this problem in almost 8 years. :D
