Compliments of the season to you all.Been having a problem with my Alpha 350.Sometimes when I press the shutter button to take a photo. The camera clicks and no image appears just a black square.I need to recompose but by then I have lost the moment.Any ideas thanks.

I don't have that camera, the closest being the A700.

My first guess would be the mirror sticking. You can set the camera to fire without lens (on the A700 it is in Menu > Cog 2 > Release without lens > Enable. Your camera may be similar.) Remove the lens and as you look at the mirror from the front, fire the camera. Do this a few times and see if the mirror flips up or not, it will be very fast but can be seen. If all is OK, let us know with whatever more information you can find.

Another thing I thought about is a sticking shutter although that would happen most, if not all of the time. After checking the mirror, as above, and all is well, very carefully lift the mirror from the bottom (careful, as there are actually two mirrors, but as they are loosely linked to each other, they will both lift). You can now see the outside of the shutter. It should be totally clean, no dust, oil or mould! You can also check the movement of the shutter while holding the mirror up, however it opens and closes so fast that you probably will not see anything useful unless it stuck while you were watching. It may be worth a try, but if it is clean, then it is unlikely to be the shutter.
