A290 built-in flash problem
« on: February 21, 2014, 05:48:34 PM »
Hi, first i would like to say hello to everyone.

Then straight to my issue.
Some time ago my built-in flash stopped working properly. It goes off sometimes but even if it does, it seems to be out of sync
from the shutter. I was looking through internet and this forum, but could not find any help to my problem.
I was trying to update firmware, following link from this thread, but it seems that sony has changed its website
and link takes me nowhere. Now i use flash gun HVL-F42AM with my camera, it works ok, however at first i had
some problems with detecting it. After few tries they start to like each other ; ). But because built-in flash does
not work, i can't use wireless mode, otherwise i would not bother myself to fix it. I'm wondering if its hardware
or software issue and what i can do repair it.

Any help will be appreciated.

Firstly Welcome Ferin.  I cannot help with an A290 but if you have it on the correct setting then it sounds like an internal connection.
Just to be clear - if you are shooting at night is the flash still unreliable?
I presume that you have tried wireless and it does not work?  If that is the case then it probably needs a trip to the repair centre....john

Thanks for your answer, but what you mean by that:

Physical damage on the camera's pcb or similar? In that case i would give it a shot and try to fix it my self.
Actually i was thinking that maybe it's a capacitor problem.

Yes, it does not work, even with flash compensation +2. What i've noticed, it does fire only first time after switching camera on,
and not every time, only after camera has been switched off for a longer time, lets say at least 5 minutes.

I've asked for advice small local camera shop, but only advice i got was, that probably repairing will be as expensive
as another second-hand body.

In case i need to replace my A290, what would you propose to get, i would like something that i can use my lenses and flash with.

Thanks in advance.

The A700 is a fantastic camera and you will pick up one relatively inexpensively.
That would be my inexpensive solution or an A77 if you are into the SLT's.
Coming from an A290 both will feel like heaven  ...john
