A200 Cracked LCD
« on: September 02, 2009, 03:15:58 PM »
Hi there,

I have a Sony A200 and love it. Recently the screen some how has got cracked which I am really annoyed about. I'm still under Sony warranty but there is no way they will fix this for free as they will just tell me I've cracked it. Therefore I am looking to possibly get it repaired. The thing is everywhere I go no one will give me a free quote. Sony want £50 for a quote. Jessops want £25. And no one can tell me how much this could possibly cost.

Does anyone have any Idea roughly how much this might cost to fix?
Is this something that I could potentially do myself?
Does anyone know how much an new LCD would cost?

Has anyone had the same problems?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
H

Cool thanks for that.
Do you know if it's an easy thing to repair yourself?

Shouldn't be too hard. I replaced my LCD screen on my nokia N95. The cable from the screen just plugged in. Hardest part will be taking it apart.

I don't think this is of much help to you, right now, but might be of interest to others.

Just today I saw this lawsuit file about the Kindle. The cause of the Kindle screen cracking is because of the cover, though with the A200, I'd argue a weak screen (especially compared to the Konica Minolta predecessors).

Thanks for all the replys guys. I went to the new Sony centre today and tried to talk to them about the issue and they basically just keep telling me that if I send it to sony they will say it's accendential damage and I will have to pay for the cost of the repair, so I think any hope of a warranty fix are out the window.

I phoned Sonys central service centre for them to tell me that a fixed cost repair on all digital SLRs is Around £115. However if they open it up and see that there is more wrong, it will have to go to an estimate. If this estimate is too high and I don't want to go ahead with the repair they charge me £50 for the estimate. What a con.

It totally feels like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. If I send it to them and they look at it and try and fix it and mess something else up in the process how do I know they are not just gonna tell me there is more wrong with it?

The thing is the rest of the camera all works perfect. I know that all that needs replacing is the screen and it will be back in perfect working order. Therefore why can't I just pay for the replacement of the screen.

Anyway It looks like the link posted by acemclynch to darntoothysam is going to be my best bet. $109.95 (£70) for a new screen and have a go at changing it myself. Or $149.55 (£95)  + £14pp = £109 for the screen and the repair as well.

I would normally have a go at doing this sort of thing myself but with not being able to find any info on the net about repairing it I'm a little nervous. Therfore I think that the extra £39 will be money well spent to have an expert repair it.

Thanks for all your help.

I've already checked that out. It would be covered but there's a £100 excess. No point claiming because I'll end up paying for it when they load my premium because I've made a claim.

Thanks, for trying though. Looks like I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and send it to the states.

Anyone know if I do send it to the US, when they send it back is the inland revenue gonna want to tax the transaction? I ask because I recently brought some new lenses for the US via ebay and when they arrived they arrived with a bill for the tax and an extra £8 for parcelforce to deal with customs. Another con

Anyway thanks again guys

For when you get it back. I HIGHLY recommend the screen protector.

I first got one after having my first a100 for a couple of days scratching it. (Never happened on my 7d's) From that point forward I know order these when I order a new camera. I won't even bring the new camera out in the field until one is applied.
It is made of glass. Not those plastic film things that peel off. They say they are removable but I have never had a reason to try.
Best of luck.

I've found another place that will fix a A200 screen at a fixed cost. They are based in shefield and they will charge £118 to change the screen and ship the camera back to me. I would have to send the camera to them which will cost £7 special delivery with royal mail. Therefore total cost of £125. So that's £16 more expensive than sending it to the USA. Is it worth sending it there? Probably better to just send it to Shefield. What do other people think?

Thanks.

Avoid sending it to the US as the extra wait when the lens passes customs and the added distance are NOT worth it. IMO

After more shopping around I've found a place in Newcastle-under-Lyme that will repair and ship the camera back to me for £109.25. So add the cost of postage(£7) to this and it will be £116.25. This is the cheapest I've found this. I've tried contacting a few places and alot of them dont do Sony cameras.

Anyway I'm off on holiday soon so I'll be sending the camera off when I return. Thanks for all the help and advice guys. I'll post a final comment when I have had the work done in a few weeks time.

Happy Snapping.

I'd recommend getting the screen changed properly. Had one changed through the fixed cost repair at the Sony service centre in South Wales. Superb service, camera back within 2 days!
Remember, if you fit a non Sony screen and have another problem it's obvious that the camera has been tampered with and will void your warranty. Also, taking the back off the camera affects the CCD alignment and can cause focusing problems. If Sony repairs the camera this will be checked and adjusted before returning it.

I thought I'd post a final entry to this. I finally got my LCD screen fixed on my A200. I went with a company called PJ Camera Repair in Newcastle Under Lyme. I Sent the camera to them on Monday via Royal Mail next day special delivery £6.70. I called them on Wednesday to confirm they had received the camera on Tuesday which they did. They called my on Thursday morning to confirm they had repaired the camera and when did I want It shipped back. I received the Camra on firday lunch time(today) all fixed and working. I've taken a few pic just as a test and all seems fine and well.
