A fault seems to have developed with my A100 while on holiday. It seems to make a whirring sound when switched on and a delay of 3 or 4 seconds before it's ready to shoot. While it still takes pictures as usual I've also noticed it gets hot under my right hand after 30 to 45 minutes, so I've taken to switching on only when needed. Anyone any suggestions what may be happening here? I do hope it`s not terminal.
Sounds like a problem with the steady shot to me.
Does it still do it with steady shot turned off?
Is the indicator for Steady shot flashing, this may indicate the problem lies here.
Hopefully someone more knowledgable will be along soon.
That had occurred to me but on or off makes no difference. Also the SSS symbol remains constant not flashing.
It still takes well exposed pictures but the overheating is worrying.I removed the CF card yesterday and it was really hot.
I reckon it`ll get worse over time and I can`t envisage it being economic to repair so I`ve started looking for a possible replacement, maybe a A350.
Thanks for the input.
Sounds like a big job with the getting hot/overheating. May be worth asking in one of the Sony forums? You could try the Sony support but they'd probably just say they'd need it sending in to give a diagnoses on. :(
Sorry to hear of the problem. You could be thinking along the right lines about getting a replacement. :)
What kind of battery are you using? Is it an original Sony or a cheap copy from China? The battery and the compact flash card are close together (I think) and any problem with a defective battery (Sony or 3rd party) will cause start-up problems, overheating under your right hand and the heat will spread to the card.
It really sounds like a bad battery.
As well as here I asked on Dyxum but no worthwhile responses.
Ascot, both batteries are original Sony and after testing the fault occurs with both. The battery however remains cold whereas the CF card gets hot.
I`m seriously thinking of getting a A350 and selling the A100 on ebay spares or repair.I feel sue that any repair attempt would be uneconomic.
Possibly a bit of a silly question but is there any chance that a corrupt CF card could cause the issue. Have you tried a different card to see if it still occurs.
Yes Chris I`ve tried several since returning from holiday.
Thanks for your input.
I did message Gary Friedman yesterday .Based on info given he seems to think SSS is malfunctioning.
I wish I could get to the bottom of the problem.
Been doing some testing on the camera. With a fully charged battery in camera I`ve left it turned on,shot a few random frames at home, watching the LCD as I do so.Camera getting hot, then battery indicator on LCD suddenly goes red showing one bar.Remove battery from camera and meter it using a multimeter.Instantly shows 7.7volts.(battery rated as 7.3v 11.5Wh)Tried the same using the other battery, same result.
I`ve had various opinions on the likely cause, including Gary Friedman who thought it may be super steady shot malfunctioning.I`ve done my own testing of SSS and it works as it should.I had sharp pictures at 1/2 second.I`m even more confused now but it`s the overheating that worries me.Any further thoughts anyone?
I checked my batteries (NP-FM500H, 7.2V, 11.8Wh rating). One that shows 88% in the camera, shows 8.21v in my Multimeter. Another at 16% in camera was 7.65v. That is normal for Li-ion batteries.
I would trust Gary Friedman as he has a lot of experience, although perhaps not as a Technician. It may be worth taking it to have it checked, not to Sony but to a local camera store. On the other hand since the A100 is now quite old and if you can afford it, get a used A350. The A700 seems to be going quite cheap and is a great camera. Either way, you will not be able to use your A100 batteries (NP-FM55H). All the Sony alpha cameras up to A77/A900 use the NP-FM500H.
Unfortunately there is nowhere locally I could take it for checking AScot.
I have my eye on a couple of A350`so I may take that route.
The camera fault seems to be getting worse.I`d already realised the NP-FM 55H can`t be used in another camera.
Dyxum is good for that sort of thing.
Thanks for your input.
have a look here Dave.
A100 for £99
A350 for £139
A550 for £299
Hi Gordon.I`ve been keeping an eye on Mifsuds. The A350`s tempting but with just 3 month warranty.
Harrisons of Sheffield have one for £150 c/w kit lens with 12 month warranty. My KM 18-70 has a scratch on the front element.
I have to talk nicely to SWMBO.
The A100 problem is getting worse. It now shuts down after just a few minutes saying depleted battery. When tested on my multimeter it shows 7.7V
BTW,not seen you on AP lately.
I bought an A350 for £190 from a fellow member on here around 18 - 24 months ago with no warranty, working fine with no signs of any problems...................
a 3 month warranty is better than nothing, and not always needed.
