who is going to be on the pre-order list?
« on: September 10, 2008, 01:49:26 AM »
i would be tempted, but i am more excited about glass then bodies, and hopefully  my a700 will be functioning properly so that i will beable to take advantage of the sweet spots in alll my lenses.

maybe in a year or 2 when the price comes down and my lens collection is complete (will that be ever? God i hope so)

The first step is admitting you have a problem.

I wait for the results first. I have seen to many hick-ups with the high end models lately and would be very surprised to say the least if Sony gets away with none. Would be good though as neither the Nikon D3 nor the Canon 1DsMKIII is without problems...

I would guess it to function identically to the a700, but with a larger sensor to capture the wider angle.  The sensor has twice the pixels in twice the surface area.  It has a pair of processors that create the same processing speed (5 fps).

I don't need the wider angle, so to me it is not an upgrade.  If I never cropped, of course this gives a finer resolution. However, if I crop, it gives me exactly the same results as the a700 uncropped.  This is a good thing, but at the cost of double sized files and twice the time to process.

I'll pass...the a700 is fantastic, and even better since downloading and installing firmware v.4!

I'm waiting on confirmation of the Aussie price.

The a900 is exactly what I thought/hoped it'd be - I'm very happy with what they've put together.

However, if it's out of price range for me at this time (which, given we're expecting a bundle of joy in a few months, is not unlikely), I'll be "settling" for an a700.

What if I just told you I had them?

You wouldn't want actual proof, right?

You just want me to use them with the best possible camera, at full frame, right?

Right?

I'm actually wondering if this camera will see the actual SONY Style' stores, in the USA.  The high-end lenses never did.  You could only really see them at the chain-stores, like Calumet Photographic or (maybe) Wolf/Ritz Camera ... and they were still quite rare.  The low end stuff was definitely in stock.

They now have the A900 on the SONY web page ... hoohah!  $349 extra for the 4 year accidental "I screwed up" plan.  I cannot find the VG listed, though.

HERE'S THE PRE-ORDER LINK (USA):

Fother

i was thinking more along the lines of make those assets liquid for you and putting them on my camera, i mean after all what do you want with old out dated lenses with no digital coatings and what not,  just sell all the gear, buy the a900, cz 85, 24-70, 16-35, 70-200 ssm, 35 g, 300 ssm, 50 1.4, sony stf and sony 100 macro, then you will be set with all the most modern coated stuff, just notify me of all the old obsolete junk you will be selling before any one else ok ?

Did everybody spot that if you want Wireless Flash on the A900, you need a HVL-58AM as the 5600HS or HVL-56 can't act as a wireless controller on the A900.

Anyone fancy a cheap 5600HS or HVL-56?  Maybe worth a look on Ebay!

i like these for wireless, i may just have to try them out, the only down side is for your transmiter you need  a hot shoe adapter, but hey maybe they will make them in the minolta shoe now that we have the a900

These look pretty cool, but as far as I can tell  you can't fit the reciever to any of the Sony flashes ???
The hotshoe adapters all appear to be for the flash mount on the camera.  Is that right?

I've been thinking about flogging my 5600's and just getting some manual Vivitar 285's. What puts me off is the reduced guide number.

you should be able to mount the recievers to the pc sync socket on the flash and use the transmiter with a hotshoe adapter seing as the transmitter just has the center "FIRE" contact

you should be able to mount the receivers to the pc sync socket on the flash and use the transmiter with a hotshoe adapter seing as the transmitter just has the center "FIRE" contact

There aren't any 'pc sync sockets' on the 5600HSD or HVL-56AM - just KM/Sony's proprietary '4 pin sync plug' and 'external power plug'.
So as far as I can tell, either a special cable (4 pin proprietary to pc sync) or a hotshoe for the flash (which includes pc sync triggering) would be required (which I can't find either!)

Edit.... just looking at:
http://www.mhohner.de/sony-minolta/flashcomp_techref.php#conn

G = ground (blue)
F1 = sync / fire flash (connect G and F1) (red)
F2 = flash ready signal / data (white) [also: bidirectional serial data line "F2OUT", "F2IN"]
F3 = TTL OK signal / clock (black) [also: serial data output: "F3L" + "F3H"]

Looks like I just need a custom cable that I can pull apart and put a PC sync connector onto pins G & F1?  (although thats a 'male socket' and the 5600hsd's have a 'female socket')

I must admit, the KM/Sony flash system drives me around the bend.  I wish the A900 (and all future cameras) just had a standard flash connector like a Canon and Nikon.   There is no need for these proprietary only sockets, it just limits the functionality and frustrates people.

from what i understand the cannon and nikon hot shoes are propretery as well except for shape and fire contact, the ttl contact is in a different place on each of those, but i think pc sync is universal, doesnt the 900 and 700 have pc sync sockets?

and as for using these triggers for trigering on camera flashes, i think they are mainly for using larger strobes or maybe 3rd party,

but i have no real knowledge of the subject
