URGENT Help Needed
« on: July 14, 2010, 12:15:02 AM »
An SOS for anyone in Paris or knows about it, I am on vacation my a900 seems to have caught some smudge pictures are really messed up! In addition to dust particles! When I look through the view finder like dust particles, smudge spots and seems like skid marks around the in the view finder. Checked some photography shops they gave me some solutions to work with and swaps, for a minute it looked like I am getting over the dust particles, and the smudge spots, thereafter all showed up back again but know with skid marks like tracks. However, when I shoot with it the dust particles and the smudges are showing as long as I can tell, this is really desperate the vacation is still at the beginning 15 more days to go at least including a 10 day cruise.

The question is what do I need to do, anyone with experience in Paris with shops of Sony who could give an emergency and immediate fix, Sunday the cruise starts. Thanks in advance. Remember I am in the city of Paris, so a solution need to be some where in the same city.
Regards,
Sarie

Really does sound like either sensor marks, in which case the swabs etc you've already bought are the solution - with patience and perseverence (it may take numerous rounds of cleaning/testing).

From what you said, it also kind of sounds like some of it is debris in the viewfinder - which shouldn't effect images - that's less an issue. If it is impacting on images, then it's the sensor, so keep at it with the cleaning gear.

good luck!

(oh, and I have no clue about services in Paris!)

Thanks fother, do you have recommendations as to what kind of solution I should look for or cleaning equipment, also is it possible that it is the two pieces of glass I.e. The Mirror and/or the other mirror under the prism that has the points built into it.

BTW, do you know if Sony provides Emergency fix up for an extra fee in within 24 hours sort of speak.

There are tons of different sensor cleaning kits around - any decent camera shop will be able to provide. Start with an air puffer, then move onto wet solutions like swabs. Brand doesn't matter much, just follow the instructions and take some care. :)

Emergency servicing? - no idea, sorry

I'm unclear as to whether you have set the camera into cleaning mode - where the mirror is raised to clean the filter over the sensor - or if you've been cleaning the mirror and screen you can see when you remove the lens.

Any marks on the mirror or screen will not show on photos although they may be seen through the viewfinder.

Any marks you see on the photos will come from the filter over the sensor which is only accessible when you put the camera into cleaning mode and it lifts the mirror for you. This is where you should concentrate your efforts to remove any dust.

You should NOT clean the mirror - it is surface silvered and is quite easy to damage. The screen above the mirror is removable on the a900 - see instruction book.

Thank you rogprov, yes I did use the cleaning mode, but it seems that the problem is a combination between the the two, sensor and the silver screen above the mirror. Will try to get what fother suggested in addition to the cleaning of the silver mirror.

Thanks again to fother and rogprov.

If you wish to have a professional shot taking a look at your camera I suggest you try and get it to the biggest Sony center you can find. There's a Sony Style shop at George V which is pretty much near to the Champ Elysee if I am correct.

I can't tell from the website whether they have the DSLR range as it is built in flash and my screen resolution is too small to fill it up entirely. I paste the shop link here, perhaps it is an ultimate resort, I hope at least that there will be something that can help you to solve it as this sounds like a major nightmare.

Thanks, I know what it is to be in deep, deep trouble. Landing in Egypt finding out that I made a mistake bringing my films in a trolley that I normally carry as hand luggage but now checked it in .. bye, bye films!

Another time. going into the Malaysian highlands (I do live in Malaysia these days) running out of battery on my digital Sony, Rolleiflex AND handheld lightmeter at the same time! Well, my eyes don't fool me, I took those shots based on my common knowledge as my Rollei in the end is all mechanical. Digital was obviously total dead.

Thank you pointblank and all others, I found the shop today, unfortunately it was closed as they have independence day here today, BTW congratulation to all our french members, tomorrow the first thing I am doing is the shop. Two options come to mind urgent fix which is the way preferred, otherwise desperate situation need desperate measures, as I have all my Carl Zeis lenses of which two I bought for this trip (never been used at least since a month from the last delivey), I might consider investing in another camera if it comes down to it, I am missing a lot of shots and beautiful scenaries including today's event.

Anyway, it might be an a850 or a900 to maintain the FF. My son is recommending to get the Nex5 with the connection for the Alpha lenses, what do you think. This will all be applicable and becomes part of the solution if they need to keep the a900 for more than 48 hours, after which I have to depart to Spain for 10 days.

I apologize for the story, but I am really frustrated with the whole thing and tomorrow is my final attempt to salvage the situation. Not to mention I also lost my brand new Blackberry on the second day of arrival. Venting some air. Thanks all for reading and responding. Hopefully I will be able to get the camera fixed and post some pictures when I return.
Regards,
Sarie

My opinion is the Nex-5 will not replace the a900 and the only lens that may work(?) are the SSM.

Even Sony doesn't guarantee full compatibility with the alpha range lens. The cheapest way is to be repaired and i am not sure if they will make it in 48hr

Aiks! Forgot about quatorze juillet! Yeah, independence will shut down every shop. You seem to have a lot of bad luck on this trip, I am so sorry to hear that.

If you wish to use a NEX you need an adapter to mount but instantly all your lenses will be manual as the adaptor does not support AF.

I am praying for the shop to be of your assistance. It would be good to hear that they are willing and capable of supporting you and in general to give us Sony enthusiasts a reason to continue supporting the brand. Good luck in getting the problem solved!

Maybe a bit leftfield, but why not just buy a cheap A230 Body to keep you going.

Did some surfing on line. Here's a shop that sells digital gear. I'd be surprised if they don't have sensor cleaning service.

Good luck.

I'm afraid out of bounce as Sarie mentioned he wants to maintain FF. Nevertheless, it is perhaps a last resort option although I think it should be doable in having some expert looking at it and come up with a reasonable solution if it is all about cleaning.
