Title: Sooooo, I just bought an a900, now what?
Post by: okiegirl on July 21, 2010, 08:27:58 AM
Hi all,
Of course i know the answer is go out and shoot, shoot, shoot, but what I am wondering is what to expect with the lens line up I currently have. I have been using three main lenses with my a700 for the last two years and have been fairly happy with the results: the sony 70-200 ssm G, the minolta 28/2, and a little less often but still seeing some action is the minolta 50/1.4. I know I am doubling mega pixels with the a900, so do you think I will be happy with the lenses I have when I use them on the 900?

Additionally, I have been using the a700 to shoot weddings, and feel completely comfortable with the camera; what major differences can I expect in the feel and/or familiarity between the two bodies?

Also, any other advice with regards to the beastie is appreciated!

Thanks!
Amie (for whom the UPS guy can't get here fast enough!)

You should be absolutely perfectly fine with your line lens up. The A700 and A900 are very similar in their feel. I don't know how the JPeg performance is as I always shoot in RAW so can't comment on this. The biggest difference is that you will fill up your memory cards "slightly" faster- apart from that- as you said- go out and shoot ;)

I think you can have high expectations from your lens set-up as they were designed for full frame. I recently got the 850 coming from a 700 and so far my results are great, it really makes the lenses do what they are capable of.

OOPS!  I just sent you a message on facebook.  I had thought that you were buying an a850.  Good for you!  Drop me an email if you want to!

Looking at your lenses...I KNOW what I would do!

I'd drop the 28/2, the 50/1.4, the 50/1.7, the 50/2.8 Macro and the 70-210/4 plus the 5D.  Looking on eBay, I see that the last 2 28/2 lenses went for $500 each.  Knowing exactly the condition of your 50/1.4 and your 70-210/4, I would guess $250 and $50 for them.  Sell the other pieces and you could have $1100 or more towards the 24-70/2.8 Z.

Hopefully you got the pics I sent on the facebook PM.

Congratulations,
The 70-200G will be awesome on the A900, i cant comment on the other lenses, but i agree that id probably do what Bill has suggested, but id possibly keep the 50/1.4 for the low light and OOF benefits.

Thanks all for the congrats! I am really excited to get my hands on it. UPS three day delivery puts it here Friday, and I really want to shoot a wedding with it on Saturday. My lens lust is focused on the 24-70Z, so I will have to sell a few lenses to start the fund :-). My daughter, who is almost 10, has taken a real interest in photography, so I think I may keep the 5D and and 50/1.4 for her.
Thanks!
