Sony A99 - high ISO shots
« on: October 31, 2012, 08:10:31 PM »
Please feel free to post some higher ISO shots from the A99.

Just as an explanation: I have just received the Sony A99 yesterday and to do some test shots around the house, I set the camera to auto-ISO. I then picked the ones with higher ISOs to post in here.

Very nice Stef,

The OOC Jpeg looks pretty good and the 6400 very good in deed. How does it feel in the hand, well balanced?

Dave- early days, I just got it yesterday and it is raining cats and dogs outside! What I have seen so far actually impresses me a lot! It delivers outstanding results right out of camera, something that I have been missing a bit lately. I can not say how well it compares to the A900 as I have not used it a lot.

Thanks Stef,

First impressions are often right when it comes to tech. If something works well the first time you use it, I find you warm to it more :)

Looking forward to seeing some more examples soon.

Those results look great Stef, even the OOC one and the (lack of) noise at those high ISO`s is very impressive.

More info that may lead me to getting the A99 eventually, but will wait a while and get used to using a 500 mirror lens again.

One thingI have to get used to again since my A77 is the extreme shallow depth of field...look at the dogs nose! What I can say so far is that I would have no worries at all to shoot at ISO3200 or 6400 with this camera. While it was possible with the A900 to shoot at higher ISOsI had to put quite some work into the post-processing. With the A99 this "work" is next to none :P In all fairness though, higher ISOs are not too much of my concern, image quality in general is. I want a camera that gives me outstanding results at base ISO and here I am particularly impressed by the dynamic range of the A99.

Very well done i have doubts about the picture quality of the camera. How many stops advantages do you find over the a900 in DR and ISO ?

Are a99 & a900 equally good at basic ISO and light situation?

Rex, I have sold my A900 and therefore I can not really compare the two. What I can say so without a doubt is that the higher ISO images (3200/6400) need next to no work with the A99 while it took quite some effort with the A900 to make them look good.

The jpeg machine is outstanding compared to the A77 and the A900.

The question about base ISO I can not answer, but again the dynamic range is stunning with the A99.

For my needs so far, I can say the A99 is worth the upgrade from both the A77 and the A99. I have to admit though, I have not had the time to properly try it out. i will keep you updated.

Rex...you want me to guess...two stops in noise and dynamic rangew is plein outstanding. I am sure the A99 will beat any (!) other top end camera model in that respect. As said before, I was reluctant to use the A900 @ISOs higher than 1600 (if even that) and I do not have any problems using the A99 at ISO 3200 and if needed ISO6400. Post-processing is minimal. You can always go and try one? They should be in the shops by now.

Thanks for the examples Stef. High ISO looks good and you can also see the large dynamic range. Impressive results.

Thanks Stef for the reply and the report.I am still at work and i saw the reply and i want to say something.

My decision for a99 was made many days before but i was waitting for someone i trust to give me definitely 100% answers about focus,ISO Dynamic Range. Many times the manufactures pay money to the testers/magazines so not very reliable reviews.

I could have the a99 already the day was released but i decided to give time for the users review and time that they have the accessories available like Rear screen protector.Tomorrow i am going to Cyprus Rally IRC i cant imagine taking a99 without screen protector or having the a99 and not to using at the Rally.

I like action and i know if i buy the camera without protector i will damage the screen like i did on my a77 last year at the 2011 IRC . So i will get it together with the screen protector in a few week later :)

I hope with this tool to take some real good pictures in Africa when i will go on Christmas.

Thanks
