Title: Sony A950 ("tentative name")
Post by: winjeel on November 12, 2010, 01:14:12 PM
According to my latest favourtist site ever, SonyAlphaRumors there is work on an A900 replacement, the A950 (tentative name), but the late release date is due to them not being sure which way to swing, either dslr or slt. The early specs seem a bit ambitious: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr4-sony-a950-tentative-name-to-be-announced-in-12-16-months/

So, it seems that Sony is waiting to hear from "professionals" about their camera (that's not aimed at professionals). If true, it also shows how much Sony is designing things based on what will sell, unlike some other Japanese brands of late (which many are known to have been designing exclusively for the Japanese market and not the world).

I believe the A900 is still a great camera. :)

In the future is going to be a new a900 probably a950 but Sony confirmed that is going to be OVF because the EVF is not ready to replace the quality of the a900 view finder.
By the end of 2011 we will see the protype of a9x?..........the a900 replacement.

Sounds interesting.

I'd be keen on one myself but I like OVF and I hope they keep that awesome viewfinder intact. I don't need my stills camera to be a video cam etc.

Finally, my current backup camera is Mrs Desmo's A300, It takes the same lenses (of course), same batteries, same flashes and therefore keeps my kit a little smaller when I feel the need to cart it around.

If Sony changes one of the crossover parameters (ie., camera battery), it will be a little less appealing as I'd then have to double up on batteries, chargers etc

If there is indeed an a900 successor/replacement in the works (no reason why there shouldn't be, got to stay ahead of the competition); then can anyone explain why the price of the a900 on the Sony site hasn't changed?  Its still showing as 2500GBP; an effort to squeeze maximum profit out of the design perhaps?  Do Sony ever release the number of units sold?

If the "a950" isn't a conventional dslr; would this be an implication that Sony is gearing more towards compact gear rather than ita impressive larger camera line-up we have at the moment?

Best regards

Gavin

I think sony are as good at promoting there new or up and coming cameras as they are at there after sale service absolutely crap!!! I love my A700 but the service for problems is pathetic. Seriously thinking about a switch to ????? Have loads of weddings booked for next year and getting nervous about sonys intentions. I cant have my 7Ds for back up for much longer as the back focus is such a problem. Come on sony stop keeping loyal people in the dark that are trying to promote your gear and make a few pounds out of our investments.

 Regards Steve

No one has said that it would only have "live view."  I believe it is inevitable that there will only be electronic viewfinders in the future and I believe that is what is being referred to.  I intend to hold onto my a850 forever.   EVFs are not too bad anymore but the a850/a900 has a great optical viewfinder that will probably not be matched again outside of medium format.
STEF, I bought the Tamron 90mm macro recently because of your great pictures and I am not disappointed!  It's a great lens especially for the price.
I'm sorry I haven't been around these past months but I haven't been doing well.  Just now I am starting to get back on my feet.

I do enjoy SonyAlphaRoomers too.  One must pay attention to has ratings of the rumours.  I think he should eliminate rumors rated 3 and lower as they are pure speculation with no basis in fact.
