Sony a850 write speed/ what type of memory do you use
« on: April 27, 2010, 10:17:16 AM »
I just bought a Sony a850 and was wondering what the write speed is and what type of memory I should use.  I read that it needs at least 16gb with a minimum speed of at least 45mb/s. I have also heard that it really doesn't need that much memory or that high of a processing speed. For those of you who have an a850, what type of memory are you using? and does anyone know the write speed? Thanks -krissynbeau

I don't own any parts of what you above said but i think max write/read speed is 40mb. Above this speed even if the card is 60mb you wont be able to use the other 20mb.

For capacity i think with the large files that you can have from 24MP 16GB card must be more than enough.

I'd recommend a Sandisk Extreme IV / Sandisk Extreme Ducati CF card (they're the ones I use...) :)

Welcome to the forum ;)

I have an a900 and use a SanDisk Extreme IV 16GB and a SanDisk Extreme Ducati 8GB. The Ducati was a limited addition and no longer available.

I have an A900 and use Sandisk extreme III's, as i only shoot landscape's, the speed of the card is unimportant to me.

Sony makes a very good Memory stick pro duo, 16 G, that's about 85 as I recall.  It is what is recommended for the camera so that's what I bought.  Don't know what the write speed is, read it somewhere, but, you will be limited in extended shooting by the buffer in the camera, not the memory write.  Supposed to shoot at 3 fps which seems right whether raw or jpg, but I've shot a lot of frames one after the other in raw and rarely had to wait for the buffer to dump.  If you shoot craw it's a little faster, jpgs go with a lot of exposures on continuous shoot before it even slows down.  I also have an 8G in my 700 and those are the only two I have.  Can't imagine filling up a 16G card even in raw but I suppose it could happen.  Sony has a warning on it's site about counterfeit memory chips that could screw up the camera.  I figured with so much cash tied up in a camera why mess around trying to save a buck on a memory chip.

First of all, Welcome to the forum and congrats of your new toy :-)

For the writing speed here is some data for a900. Many reviews say that there isn't big difference between a850 and a900 ...

I'm mainly using the new 60MB/s Sandisk Extreme.  Make sure the card supports UDMA to get good speed.
