Hello; again...to all of you!

After an a "While"...returned to own this time a Sony A900...last week was acquired, here in Israel, where I live...want your Polite/Sincerely...input about one lens...that as I'm now a "Pensioner"...such "NEWER glass investment it's very "Heavy" for me!.

From my Dynax Maxxum 9xi body...I'm using now the Minolta (First Version), 24-85mm zoom lens...want very much the "Perfectly Match" glass a Zeiss Vario-Zoonar 24-70mm 2,8 unit...but the price as wrote...it's very huge...for so...please advise me very "Gently/Polite & honestly"...if the final results among my "Vintage" & this "Matched" glasses is SO HUGE?.

Thanks so much for your kindness!

Peace,

Alex 007

Lucky you getting an A900. I think my A900 owners here are getting the CZ24-80 lens (I think that's right), but I don't know how heavy it is. However, the 50mm 1.4 is pretty lightweight (and I'm currently have a lot of fun with mine) and goes well with the A900.

Sony the200, Minolta 28mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 70-300mm Gregarious, 100mm 2.8 macro.

Hello Winjeel!

You mistake it's till 70mm NOT till 80mm! As here in Israel we have a lot of "Desert Dust"...my goal is NOT to change lenses...yes...for 95% of DSLR owners my "WAY"....seems ridiculous!. A normal 50mm is "Inside" my today's in use "Vintage" 24-85mm or the "Pricey" Zeiss glass. So really IN my opinion...don't need it!.

Thanks anyway!

Peace.

Alex- how good is a lens is a bit a question like how long is a piece of string? It depends very much on your requirements. The CZ 24-70 is outstanding on the A900 (I have them) but than I can't remember your lens. The other day somebody borrowed my A100 with an old Minolta 80-200mm lens. I was actually very surprised to see how good that old lens performed. So I would suggest: shoot some images with your lens and stop the lens down two stops aad then see how you like the performance. Alternatively to the CZ there are some Tamrons and Sigmas out there in similar range that might fulfill your requirements.

Dear Stef,

Yes already after that I was an "Active" technical photographer for more of 4 decades, I know that stopping two stops...(During "Film" era...of course....!), gave the best results. But today's "Sensor" instead "Film"...ask for MUCH better design glasses. Secondly the A900 is asking for a 2,8 aperture lens...for 100% compatibility among the sensor/auto focus...etc, that the "Film" epoch bodies!.

I'm thinking seriously...but if the ONLY..."Gray Seller"...that import to Israel...Sony A700/900 bodies...will accept my "Terms", or "Importing Zone"...(I want ONLY from USA), he imports from Asia...! Location that DON'T makes me happy!.

I will inform to all of you...what will happen!

Thanks so much,

Peace,

Alex 007

Congrats, the a900 is nearly as good a camera as the Maxxum 9, which was the culmination of the film era Maxxum's, in fact all SLR's.   (although the "7" had some good features too that the 9 missed).

I can only speak for the 135 f/1.8 Carl Zeiss.  And the word is superb in all senses.  Both on film and digital.

I want to get the 16-35 as well, the only zoom on my short list of lenses to get.

I have the 28-70 f/2.8 G  (Minolta) and it is a very good lens to use with the a900, although the distortions are strong wide and of course the zoom range is a little more constrained than the CZ v.  There is a Sony event here in Montreal next Sun. - perhaps I should attend and compare.  Just called to reserve a slot...

Be careful in your lens choices that you don't accidentally get a smaller image circle lens.
(Sony: DT).  For example the Carl-Zeiss 16-80 which had "DT" in its model name has an APS-C sized image circle.  But I'm sure you know that.

Alex- the above I don't get? Yes 2.8 paerture lenses are fantastic but the A900 can deal with many other ones as well and very well indeed.
I.e. the beercan (Minolta 70-210 f4); Sigma 15-30 F3.5-4.5 EX Aspherical DG DF; Sigma AF 4/ 100-300mm APO DG EX are examples of lenses that I have and that work perfectly well on the A900. What I have been trying to say and siad in other threads it that some lenses that don't work that well on i.e. the A700 CAN work very well on the A900 and the other way around. Therefore my suggestion with the A900 give all your lenses a try and see how they perform. I was surprised to see that some of the older models that I had regarded gave very good reults indeed on the A900. Good luck with your buying decisions!

Hi I have a Konica Minolta 28-75 2.8 on my 900 80%of the time and find it a great setup and the lens can be bought for a good price
