Title: Full frame lens
Post by: scobner on February 16, 2013, 08:48:14 PM
Hi,  I am just a couple of days away from buying an A99.  I was going to keep my A55 and lenses for a smaller family use camera, but as I have just found out my lenses are crop ones, I will be selling all my kit to help fund A99 lenses.
I usually shoot with a 18 - 200 as an everyday lens and use my 35 prime for the special photos.
I need some advice on what lenses to get. I don't really need the 200 but would like some kind of telephoto.
Could someone point out a good 18 - 70 ish lens, a telephoto and a good 30 or 50 prime.
Hope im not asking too much.
Also, should I put my kit on eBay or is there a better place to sell cameras.

If you have the money to spend you can't go wrong with the 16-35CZ and 24-70CZ.

I have just upgraded to an A99 from my A700 (which I am keeping).  Other than my 17-70 Sigma, all of my lenses are full frame.
For a zoom  I would go for the 70-300G which on the full frame will give you similar length to your current zoom.
This is a fantastic lens- not too expensive and very easy to handle.
Others may suggest the 70-200G F2.8 or the 70-400G but I found them cumbersome.

I have the Sony 50mm F1.4 as my fast prime and just purchased the 24-70mmCZ that Tom mentions.

Hope this helps

This is a bit tricky to answer as it completely depends on your budget. I would sugegst you hve a look over at Dyxum. They have a superb lens section with reviews and scores.

See here: (

Look at th very right hand side. You can fill in all your parameters and at the bottom, I suggest you change the default order to review score. This will then open up a new window where at the top is the lens with the highest score. You can then click under each lens the "review" button and it will lead you to comments from people who have used them.

Hope this helps?

Thanks for your reply guys.
I think I may be punching above my weight by buying an A99, but it seems the most logical upgrade from my A55.
I will use it 40% of the time for video, so a lot of the features the 99 offer make it a no-brainer for that.
Stef, I have used the lens database you pointed out and cant work out which option is best.  Both the lenses below seem to offer the same but was wondering if any of you had any comments.
Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di
Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM
I would like the CZ one, but my budget cannot stretch that far.

Hi, I use the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM on my A900, as the CZ was more than I could afford when I switched to FF.

Generally very happy with it - it's the lens that sits on my camera by default, and though I do switch to the Minolta 85 f/1.4 G when I want something a bit longer or faster, I have yet to find a situation where I've switched to the Sony 50 f/1.4 - which I would do when I had the CZ16-80 on my A700.
