What are you trying to open it with?
You might check to see if whatever program you are trying to use has an update that you need to apply.

What version of camera raw are you using?
You need version 5.6 to open the a850 raw files.

Looks like you can not use cs3 as it does not support camera raw 5.6.
Lightroom2 supports it as well as the Lightroom3 beta, which you could use for free, http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom3/
or you can upgrade to cs4

that sucks

looks like you will be shopping for some new software.

No, Senior is correct - for ACR 5.6 you need CS4. Lightroom 2 is equivalent, and probably cheaper than a photoshop upgrade - worth checking, anyway

Alternatively you could use the Sony Image Suite software that comes with the camera to conver to JPG or DNG, and do whatever other edits you want to in PS3 after that. A nuisance, but cost free solution until you're ready to upgrade photoshop / lightroom...

nope, cs3 does not support camera raw 5.6.
also I am wrong about lightroom3, it does not have an update to support the a850, but will support it once it's out of beta.

lightroom2 does support it, you could download a trial version of it.

I have not tried it personally but I would try the DNG converter from Adobe. This means you convert your file to DNG and then open you file in your version of ACR. If it works can you please let us know as I haven't tried it yet myself. Should work though...???

well you do not have to convert to jpeg, you can convert to DNG, which is adobe raw file format, just as good as sony raw file.

lightroom will convert to DNG during import which is the simplest way.
then you could open in cs3 with no problem.
