a900 with hvl58am flash misfires
« on: December 28, 2013, 05:03:50 AM »
I am shooting with a a900 using hvl58am flash in auto mode and it seems like it white washes almost every picture. I thought it was the flash so I bought another one, but it is used. I was told it was used very little and was in great working order but it is doing the same thing my other flash did. Has anyone else had this problem? could it be the camera not reading the flash?

1st: Try to clean the contacts of camera iISO & flash shoe with pure alcohol that evaporate very quickly
2nd:If is a big play(cap) between camera and flash then try to minimise this play by attaching underneath the flash one or two layers of Cele tape

Thanks I'll try that today before I go out shooting. I was also told that the camera should be set on TTL instead of ADI but in the menu it only has ADI or pre-flash TTL does it matter which setting it is on? I thought the flash automatically compensated for the cameras readings unless in manual mode

If you set it to ADI it will use the distance encoding from the lens as part of the flash power calculation IF the lens supports it (all Sony lenses, later Minolta lenses with 8 contacts) - if not it will drop back to TTL.

It will also use TTL if you have the flash set to bounce rather than direct.

Regarding the flash overexposure - check you don't have a positive flash compensation set - I can't remember where this is, as I have FEC set to my custom button!

Faldrax is right I always leave it on ADI and when I bounce the flash the camera goes automatically back to TTL
