A900 upgrade was a good move
« on: April 20, 2012, 10:10:19 AM »
Well, I've had the A900 for a couple of months now, and over Easter got to actually use it while 'out and about' with family.

In use it is very similar to my A700 - but bigger (heavier!) and brighter.

However, it's on getting back home and importing the images to LR that I really noticed the difference.

I am getting a noticeably higher 'success' rate - so more of the pictures I take are potential keepers, and they need less adjustment in LR to bring out the best (IE Less Fill or Highlight Recovery).

The two may, of course, be related (since they look better before adjustment, they are more likely to be considered as keepers).

The only downside is that I need a bigger bag :)

It's funny. My keeper ratio went to almost zero since acquiring the a850 :) Increased resolution points out every little error and glitch :)  Also getting better as a photographer, so I'm less impressed with myself vs when I started :D

What lens you use most on FF?

The a900 is a wondrous device. I love mine after upgrading from the a700.  See so many more details.  I shoot mostly landscape and nature (animals, insects).  I'm not a portrait person but the Portraits I have shot are wonderful (after figuring out the FF dof compared to apsc).

I use a Minolta 20 2.8,35 f2, Sony 50mm and a tamron 70-200 2.8. Great combo of lenses

My next lens will probably be a 70-200 f/2.8 or the 70-400G - but I suspect it will be a while before I can get the cash together for either - the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 was a purchase I had not been figuring on when I decided I could afford the A900, and is sitting on a 0% CC deal which I will eventually have to pay off :)

Personally I blame Mark (Tiller) - when I visited the Cat Survival Trust last year he let me use his A900 for the day, and I was hooked

Anyway, off to the CST again this Sunday (another photo day organised by Mark), so hoping the weather will stay dry.

I think the same thing, should I get a 24-70/28-75 lens? For me, I'm happy as a clam with my 20 35 50 primes. I just swap them out as needed and it works out great. Plus I got all 3 for what the sigma 24-70 costs. (haven't priced it so I'm just guessing). I know the tamron 28-75 is a superb lens and KurtMunger.com compared it to the sony 28-75 and the cz24-70 and he picks the tamron!  I agree with his sentiments because he has the same shots for each lens and the tamron beats the CZ and sony in several instances.
It's worth a read for sure just to see the pics. Plus the tamron is priced cheap compared to the others.

If you can, look at the tamron 70-200. It's pretty much razor sharp! 2.8 is sharp 4 onward is razor sharp.  I've had that lens since they released it and it's been a superb performer!

I was used to the CZ 16-80 on my A700, and already had the 12-24 & 70-300, making the 24-70 the obvious choice of zoom - it was just under £600, inc. 3 year warranty. While I would have liked the CZ, price discounted that option.

I have been very happy with the results so far.
