A900 replacement coming soon?
« on: May 11, 2010, 12:54:23 PM »
I was about to post this is the Nex 3/5 thread started by TG, but thought better to make a new thread instead.

TG posted this link: http://www.sonystyle.com.hk/ss/product/alpha/a900_e.jsp that says that the A900 is now discontinued, at least in Hong Kong. The Japanese Sony website is always a couple months behind, and so no such statement there, yet. No Nex is shown on the Sony Japan site.

Now, I'm hoping for a imminent release of a replacement A900, and a bunch of cheap A900's become available on the second hand market. ;)  My guess is that it'll be either July or September (judging from previous experiences). Though... on second thoughts, I'm guessing a new A700 series would come first... with a 12 month gap between the A7xx and A9xx. However, is it good strategy to allow the full-frame camera class to go out of stock?

The a900 was out of stock for several weeks at B&H and Adorama. Many were using this as some evidence of the a900 being discontinued. Well both have the a900 in stock again.

If they release one soon then it could be good timing for me. I plan to upgrade to a full frame DSLR with a bigger pixel count very soon and obviously I'm sticking with Sony but there's no way I'm buying what is essentially a 2 year old camera, no matter how good a deal it is. I friend of mine just bought a Cannon 5D and I really need something with that spec, certainly that camera's ISO performance.

I reckon Sony will announce the A700 and A900 successors at the same time, hopefully in the next month or two.

I am pretty certain we can expect some new top end camera models soon. (Wishful thinking...)

I haven't heard anything from my Sony contacts, but with Photokina coming up in September, I would expect them to be releasing the A7xx and the 500/4 then and hopefully anonouncing something full frame!

September seems a long way away. Was there not a lot of talk here about them releasing a new high end camera in time for the world cup seeing as how Sony are one of the official sponsors? I suppose if they were going to do that they would have announced something by now. Sony do seem to be getting left behind somewhat in the mid and high end camera market. I hope whatever they come up with is really special.  As I said before I really want to invest in a full frame DSLR, I'll hold out to see what Sony do next.

The matter is when? the 500mm f4, and the 24mm f2 are ready there and waitting.

Sony seems to play  games with us. STOP production of a700 and then a900 and nothing to introduce

TG- I think they really want to get the hd video right. They are very successful in the video division and I think once they implement video into their cameras it will be ahead of the game. They always said- they would only implement it when they got it right. Let's wait and see.

I agree with Stef. My knowledge of Japanese companies is that they don't like gaps, but they really don't like rushing a release. Besides, we'll probably complain and gripe if something did work so well.

Besides, the new A290 will be 14mega pixel, but the Nikon D3s (the current top Nikon camera, initial release was USD$8,000 I believe) is just 12 mega pixels and full-frame. Of course there's other ways to measure the quality of a camera, but I think the Sony entry-level cameras are doing pretty well, and that's before you consider comparing the D3s to the two-year old, nearly obsolete A900 ;)

I'm waiting with bated breath for the A700 replacement I will derinitely buy ---the only gripe I have is that I bought the A700 after a few weeks of launch at practically full price and then a few weeks later they were on sale for two thirds less--made me real angry--I will wait a month or two this time around!!

A wise move to wait, it's always a mistake with and new camera to buy early, they always come down in price after a while.
