I agree with Stef. My knowledge of Japanese companies is that they don't like gaps, but they really don't like rushing a release. Besides, we'll probably complain and gripe if something did work so well.
Besides, the new A290 will be 14mega pixel, but the Nikon D3s (the current top Nikon camera, initial release was USD$8,000 I believe) is just 12 mega pixels and full-frame. Of course there's other ways to measure the quality of a camera, but I think the Sony entry-level cameras are doing pretty well, and that's before you consider comparing the D3s to the two-year old, nearly obsolete
