Stef how does the detail slider in ACR 6.1 differ from the one in ACR 5.7?

It works much better. Adobe has reworked quite a few things in CS5. One of them is the noise reduction as they have realised that a lot of people criticised the fact that they had to buy another program to deal with noise. They have also completely revised the hdr feature in CS5 which might make programs such as Photomatix redundant. I am not totally convinced about this but have to say it does work much much better than the older one. You could download the trial version and see for yourself?

I'll use Dfine because a) it is rather good b) you can have it as an plug-in for Apple Aperture.

I use Photoshop at work ... but for some reasons I don't like it. At home I use LightZone for editing images (as an External Editor from Aperture)... well, I am one of those odd persons  :-D  LOL

Have to agree that CS5 is doing good job.

I downloaded CS5 (trial version) last night and had a play with the new ACR.
I must say that i am Very impressed. I used it on some 300 sec boat images that i used recently, and all i can say is WOW !
No more noise and still a sharp image :-)

Is ACR 6.1 in CS5 that same, as what is in the lightroom 3??
or rather is the noise control bit the same in both programs?

Interesting thread. I need to check whether I have this Nik Dfine software as I have a suite but I am currently using parts of it only. I installed CS5 and noticed that it does not support the Nik plug-ins which is a bit of a bummer as obviously Nik is so much more then just noise reduction (as you can tell I did not even know they have it until I read this thread).

I saw some HDR results produced by CS5 and it looks rather promising. Not that I am a too big HDR fan but at times where the dynamic range is too high it is either using multiple layers or HDR merge. Until CS4 the HDR tool is unpredictive and requires alot of manual work. Photomatix is a total turn-off.

So, all and all need to have a closer look at CS5 as I have some noise problems on low ISO shots, due to long shutterspeeds making the noise kick in.

I have CS4 and Lightroom 2 but use mainly CS4.  The upgrade cost to get ACR 6.? is either £75 for Lightroom 3 or £175 for CS5 but which am I better going for?

Pointblank- CS5 does support the Nik software pluggins. I have got most of them and I have no problem to access them from CS5?

Fud- you can download th trial version and give it a try. If you use mainly CS4 than for you workflow CS5 might be worth the upgrade?

I have read an article yesterday in Shutterbug where the writer said that the upgrade from CS4 to CS5 is not worth it. I can't disagree with that statement more. I have been beta testing the software for a couple of months now and some of the new tools or revised old tools are plain mind blowing.

Nevertheless, make up your own mind by downloading the trial version. Also check out Adobe's tutorials to see the full potential:

Im curious how you got the Nik plug-ins working, I have pointed the application/plug-ins folder as the destination for the installation but the filter sets itself do not appear in the filters menu. Am I overlooking something?

I really can't answer this without looking into it and I am already with one foot out of the door to Europe. I did not have any quandries at all. I copied the Nik plug in folder from the location where it was in CS4 into exactly the same location in CS5 and voila- no problem.
So have a look where it is stored in CS4 -copy the folder and paste it into the same destination in CS5.

You just copied the folder ... hmm, clever thought. Perhaps that is what I need to consider. Will try again, thanks for the tip! (be careful on the road, ya?)

You must open PS in 32 bit mode, as Nik plugins can't run in 64 bit, yet...
