I'm just hoping they have it on sale by the time I go to Borneo in late May :)

I think the reason it has taken so long for there to be a replacement to the A700 is that the key thing that needs changing to meet the needs of the sports/wildlife market is a complete re-vamp of the focusing system to provide quicker and more accurate focusing on fast moving subjects.  As Canon proved with the Mark III this is not easy and Sony have probably taken notice of what happened to Canon and will not release a replacement until they are sure the AF works well.

Actually Michael, could it be that the camera is ready for the World Cup, but a rather important accessory is being readied for the tournament? Proper 4-500mm primes? Maybe even a 600mm?

Doctorwho- you have a very valid point... I wouldn't hold my breath for a replacement of the A700 but I would dare to say that some new lenses might be on the horizon.

Thanks for the info.

I probably won't be able to afford the pending 400/f4 (I can dream, eh?) but it burns me a bit that they have a lack of decent long lenses. I'd kill for a 400/f4 prime. They seem to have a confusing plethora of bodies at the moment. One assumes the economy has slowed R&D a bit.

Good point about the World Cup. But they might come out with pro-grade 600/f4s so they can be seen in the media coverage of the Cup ... along side of Nikon and Canon.

The interesting point on using 600 F4 for sport is that if you are near pitchside it is too long on a crop sensor to be able to get good shots.  SO maybe the 750 would be 18mp but full frame which I believe would reduce the amount of noise as each sensor would be larger :)
