I've got one.....
« on: October 30, 2009, 09:43:36 PM »
Only had the 550 since monday so all I've had a chance to do is see how it fits in the hand. In no particular order my first impressions over my previous 350 are these,
It's as nice and secure to hold as the 350 with the on/off switch, shutter release and control dial falling just right for me, which is a slight improvement.
The navigation 4 way pad is much better and I no longer need to worry about locking up the autofocus by inadvertently pressing it with the palm of my thumb.
I think the menu system is much better with a clearer more logical display.
The viewfinder is still dreadful compared to the 700 but seems better than the 350 for some reason (I will buy the Pentax magnifyer one day!)
The optical viewfinder has a grid etched on it and is much clearer to compose on than the 350.
The shutter/mirror seem a little more violent than the 350?
Wonderful big clear LCD screen! A huge improvement over the 350.
Menu and function buttons are more logical, at least for me.
The MF check function seems as if it will be useful when I find out what it's for. ( I read the manual about 2 weeks after I buy something....I'm told it's a 'man' thing...).
I've tried the HDR function and it seems excellent as long as you don't photograph a fast moving bird....you end up with 2 blurred birds for your effort.
So far so good but I bought it for it's vaunted low light capacity and I've not had a chance to compare that yet.  After 4 days I'm happy I spent my hard earned cash on it and thats a relief!

I did consider that you'd only use the hdr with a tripod, but you've give us all an idea, something to play with. I wonder if you can use hdr with continuous shooting, then merge the photos... hmm...

congrat's by the way. I'm sure you'll get a lot out of that camera.

Sods law states that when you buy a new toy you don't have time to play with it!!  I have had time to take about ten shots of the cat on the drive and thats about it! I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark....D'oh!   Once I find out how to post photos (I will read the posts honest) I will upload them. I have a few from the a350 that I would like advice on as well!

Any updates on using your new A550?  I was thinkin about an upgrade to the 550 from my faulty 350.  Would my lenses off my 350 fit the 550?

Cheers

Yes, your lenses would work fine.  They will work on all alpha and Minolta cameras.

I'm thinking of upgrading my perfectly good a350 for an a550 too.  Tough call.

Cheers!

I'm not sure if it's a big enough upgrade to be worth it.  The next step up would be the 850 or 900, but they are full frame, and I'm sure my lenses won't work properly on them.  Decisions decisions.

Good to hear that you are satisfied with your new investment. HDR indeed is best for stills only as otherwise you do end up having 'ghost' effect. The good thing of the Sony however is that handheld is very much possible as the camera has technique on board to align it very need whereas normally a tripod is strongly recommended. Sony, make.believe ...
