Title: Captured image is off to the right
Post by: stillnk on January 19, 2010, 06:34:43 AM
Hi everybody,

I am kind of new to whole SLR world. I recently bought a Sony A350 with the kit lens. Only had 300 shots on it so far. I just noticed a weird thing with my shots. All the images that A350 captures are off towards right. Let's say I am shooting a view in the space of "ABCDEFGH" and I aimed (on a tripod) the subspace of "BCDEFG" on the viewfinder .. what I captured would be "CDEFGH".

Can someone please explain what I might be doing wrong? Or, maybe the camera or the lens is defective?

Thanks in advance,

sounds like the sensor is mis-aligned. where did you buy it? I'd be looking to exchange it...

Are you using a cable/remote release if the camera is on a tripod it's just possible that as you press the shutter release you're inadvertently moving the camera, try setting it on a 2 or 10 sec delay....or try using it on a solid surface such as a table just to capture an image & if that all fails , as fother suggested take it back to the store....

Are you confident that you are looking through the viewfinder squarely by putting your eye practically up against the viewfinder?  If you are keeping you eye too far back from the camera's viewfinder, that will affect what your perception is as to what the camera is looking at.  If that is the case, then it is basically parallax error.

Thanks for all the comments. Just got off the phone with a sony technician. As fother said it is probably an off centered sensor. Now, my warranty is over, and they estimated $288 for the repair (FLAT RATE). Luckily I have purchased this using a sony card, which was supposed to double the manufacturer warranty. Just filed a claim through them. We'll see.

@zekewhipper & @keithf: I have tried using a tripod and just placing the camera on a straight table. I have also tried taking photos using LiveView. The same problem happens even for pictures taken with LiveView and it is much more interesting to see. Because one second I am seeing BCDEFG and the captured image the other second is CDEFGH. Apparently there are two different sensor in this camera. The actual 14.2MP sensor + another cheap sensor for the LiveView function.
