First Black Frame Issue
« on: November 10, 2009, 10:14:16 AM »
While this has probably been discussed to death in the past, looking through the archives has left me confused, especially as I too am suffering from erratic flash exposures with a non  D-series lens (an old Tamron 28-200 superzoom, my knockabout lens for hazzard situations such as my wood turning shop!), so am left wondering which fault is which.

The 7D is now my backup camera for when I don't want to risk my A700, so often goes for a while without being used. I always get the first frame or two either unexposed (i.e. totally black) or very underexposed. The camera often actually seems to lock up, so that I have to turn it off and back on before it then usually starts to work OK. I recently used it with the built in flash for some fill in, in P-mode, however, and the exposures never settled down either, so that I had to rely on ambient light and a slow shutter speed - thankfully the anti-shake still works!

In view of the above, would someone please inform me, in simple terms, what causes this first black frame, is it repairable, and could the flash problems be related to it at all, or are they purely because of the Tamron being non-D?

Thank you,

TonyW.

The First Frame Black issue is a problem with the shutter mechanism, apparently. With my camera, it either left me with black pictures, or dark blue ones (I'm not convinced that it was a shutter actuation problem).

What you're describing sounds a little like a sticky aperture. I don't know much about it. Let's see what others can offer.

........the First Frame Black issue is a problem with the shutter mechanism, apparently.....

As winjeel says the problem is on the shutter. The coil and the gear mechanisms that actuate the curtin it get stuck. If you look in the service manual of the camera you will see that this part(gear) must be lubricate with specific grease. To reach this gear you have to open the camera. So when the make repair the change the hole mechanisms coil and gear together. Form some people they have send it for repair after a while they coplain again that the problem with the black frame came back.

Thank you for these replies, everyone. I have now emailed the Sony service people here in the UK - JP Service Solutions - to have my camera repaired.
