Jonathan, it is not just Sony who play hard ball with repairs.
I have always been a Minolta person with Cameras but used to buy printers of any make.
Before digital days, I had a Canon printer where I could swap in 3 colour inks or a black cartridge (younger daughter used to plough through drafts when she was at university).
A brand new black cartridge was faulty and would not print but Canon would not replace it as it was 1 month over it's use by date.  They would not even sell me a replacement at cost price.
And the people I dealt with up the chain were downright rude.

This more than 10 years ago and I have never purchased another Canon anything.

There is nothing that puts people of a brand more than poor customer service, but I expect most manufacturers would be the same. One of the quickest routes to getting some sort of satisfaction these days is to resort to social media channels Facebook, Twitter feeds etc these are often now monitored and far more closely than email. Posting on  Social media tends to draw a lot more attention very quickly. I was recently having an issue with Dell have spent many hours and numerous phone calls trying to sort the problem I resorted to FB, the issue was solved the following day.

Since tweeting the CEO in Japan twice Sony have been in touch a couple of times, have contacted the repair centre for a quote and are chasing Sony Thailand for purchase dates. They ring me and keep me updated. All good signs I think. They are calling me back Monday.

Hope nothing happens to mine Alan necessitating a fight with Sony.  The dinosaur generation has refused to join facebook and twitter.  I would have to think hard on what would be the lesser of the two evils.
But great news....john
