A77 - Slightly play in lens mount - noise when powering off.
« on: March 08, 2013, 07:38:20 PM »
I've only had my A77 a couple of month and not had much time to really get to used it so only just noticed these two things.

1) When a lens mounted there is some slight play in the fitting not a look my an only really noticed it when I mounted a 70-200mm lens. In case it was the lens I mounted a couple of others and the same play is there. Plus mounted the 70-200 on my A100 and no play. I'm not sure it's causing a problem but is now very disconcerting especially when using the tripod mount on the 70-200.

2) When I power off the A77 there is a slight pause and with in a second  there is a noise which I can best describe as a slight grown of less than a second as if some thing is being retracted.

I'd not noticed either of these things before so can someone confirm whether they do or don't have the same on their Cameras. I don't want a wasted trip to the back to the dealer tomorrow.

Thanks,
Alan.

Hi Alan both sound perfectly normal and nothing to worry about ;-)

You will probably notice the slight movement more with the big lenses? My 70-400G is just the same with some definite movement! It like a little click and you realise it has shifted slightly?

It not a great deal of movement but certainly enough to notice? I was the same as you with the same concerns until I checked at the now defunct Jessops, and there display models were just the same!

The little growl when it shuts down is I believe the sensor clean function?

It is quieter and quicker though with the latest firmware? I think it was noticed in the 1.05 or 1.06 update that it turned off quicker? (You should be on firmware 1.07 now!)

Hi Alpha 100

Welcome here...

What you describe has been normal in my A77.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for such a fast response, I won't get up early now to head off to the dealer.

The movement is only very slight, a fraction of a degree, hence not noticing it before. As  for the noise at the end as it cleans the sensor now makes perfect sense and again not sure why I didn't notice it before. I think I'm getting over cautious as a couple of items I bought over the last year have not lived up to the quality they should have.

Thanks for the welcome Clive. I've been monitoring the site for sometime, long before buying my A77 and hopefully will soon be a contributor rather than someone that just asks questions. Sorry to read about your own issues, hope they get resolved to your satisfaction soon.

Alan.

I confirm also what the others members said. Nothing to worry just imagine in 40~45 Celsius how these metal will have expand and no way to remove the lens from the body until it cooled down :(

In short the bigger and heavier the lens the more noticeable the movement :) and a big wellcome also

Alpha 100,

According to Gary Friedman's book on the A77, when you switch off the camera it actually takes about 8 seconds for the camera to actually fully shutdown. Normal operation.

If you don't already have Gary Friedman's book it is worth its weight in gold. I have both the A100 and the A65/ A77 versions.

Cheers

I replaced the mirror in late January (it was mailed to our address in Hawaii) and there was no difference (in ghosting), so I put the original mirror back in the A77 in case they questioned the replacement.

I could see no difference in the physical structure of the two mirrors. The carbon-fiber (?) frame was identical on both mirrors.
