A77 issue
« on: December 13, 2016, 08:53:38 PM »
Got my second hand A77 today, and it looks good.

but, I do have an issue with it.

When I go into the menus and use the joystick to navigate around, after making my selection, it seems to carry on scrolling through the menus, and I have to physically stop it moving by pressing the joystick and maybe have to navigate back again.

Is this a problem that can be solved easily by me?

The shutter count on the advert stated just over 29,500

Is the firmware on the camera the most recent version. Mine when i had it never done that but it was unresponsive at times until i installed the newer firmware. I take it you can send it back if the problem persists?

^^^Yep.

IT is either a firmware problem... or the joystick is bad (sticking) and needs to be replaced.

the firmware version is version 1.05...............

As far as sending it back goes, I can do if required.

just checked to see what the latest firmware version is, and its 1.07, not too sure if that will cure it as the joystick does feel a little stiff

oh well, looks like its going to go back then

Both the A77 and A77II will make you happy in terms of their image quality and flexibility.

The A77II really WOULD be worth it if you could swing it....

got a phone call from the shop today, they checked the body out and had the same problem, they asked me if I wanted it serviced and returned or a refund, I asked for a refund for now, but will look at getting one early next year, may even be able to get an A77ii bargain in the sales.

A shame to have your new toy snatched from your grasp after waiting so long but a good result.  Were they going to charge for the servicing of it as they cannot re-sell it knowing it has a fault surely?...john

Thinking about it, I should have asked them if they were going to charge me for the service if I decided to keep it, but really, they should have picked that fault up and sorted it before offering it for sale......

I have waited this long, can wait a few more weeks for another chance to get one.

This one was only £299, and appeared to be an absolute bargain, I have seen another one for £399 at another second hand dealer, but as said earlier, may see what `bargains` are out there next month

Gordon, From what I can see, the A77 (body only) is going for around £400 to £500. You may be lucky again and get one cheaper. The A77II is around £1200 Body only.

It's a shame you did not ask how much to repair the other A77. there was a good chance it would have been repaired for free, or at a nominal cost. I assume that the seller had to pay for return shipping. Then they had the cost of repairing it and trying to resell it. If they were a dealer they would probably have given you a good deal, a private seller possibly less likely. The A77II would be a better choice at a higher cost, but I am convinced that the A77 would be the best buy, considering the price difference. You will find it is a superb camera and a big step up from the A700.

That A77 from Wex would probably be a good buy. There does appear to be some heavy wear around the places that are in contact with fingers, not a big deal. The LCD screen looks terrible, however that looks like a screen protector that is partially peeling and would be easy to replace. The fact is that when turned on you probably will not see these marks. The shutter count of approx. 21,835 is questionable. It could be true or it could be much more. Use this software tool Here to check the real count as the count is reset to zero if you reset the camera for any reason. All Sony cameras, with the exception of the A100 A200 A300 A350 and A700, are supported. Sony claims that the shutter is designed for about 150,000 clicks on the A77.

Some time ago I visited my local dealer to get an estimate on my A77 as a trade in for a new A77II. The salesman (who was the so called expert in Sony sales) went to the menu and brought up the shutter count. He said that "the shutter count is very low, didn't you use it?" I can only assume that he really was uninformed about checking the real count. In addition, he mentioned that the screen was slightly de-laminated. I had to point out that it was a screen protector. I conclude that he was clueless.
