A77 Batteries not charging
« on: May 12, 2015, 01:45:33 PM »
I have an A77 with its original Sony BC-VM10 charger and M series battery and also a second Hähnel NP-FM500H equivalent battery. Recently BOTH batteries have stopped charging fully only achieving one stripe on the camera charge indicator. The charger lights up when a battery is inserted showing an electrical connection, but the light goes out after a short time (perhaps 15 minutes). As both an original charger or battery would be expensive to replace I'd like to know which is likely to be at fault. I suspect because it happens with both batteries that it's likely to be the charger. Has anyone any comments or experience of this or a good tip for working out which the culprit is? And if I didn't opt for an original charger has anyone experience of a cheaper substitute?

It sounds like the charger is faulty. You can buy cheap no names that work well. The BC-VM10A (Mine are the north American version) are made in China, probably by the same people that make the cheap version at a fraction of the cost.

Welcome Norman.  Why not take your charger to a camera store and ask if they would put one of the batteries from their display in?  If you took the battery as well, you could test both but if two batteries behave similarly then it is more likely to be the charger...john

^^^Sound advice.

Without checking to be sure, either the batteries or the charger could be at fault.

How old are the batteries? How often are they used? Also, the camera could be having problems....

The chip in the Sony battery is supposed to calculate remaining charge. If it is bad, the battery will need to be replaced. :(
