I am always in favour of going back to basics but not really if the camera is meant as a replacement for my compact camera. If have to go though any effort than I might as well take my dSLR along. Just my personal thoughts...

What colours are you thinking of getting? I have realised over time that I have way too many different backdrops and usually I use either a clean white or a black one and very rarely a creamish/brown one. All the other ones (blue, yellow...) have no real use for me and just collect dust.

Michael - the very first thing I would do is get rid of the colour cast. The background I guess should be white? So in your post-processing software use the white eye dropper in levels or curves and click on the background to make it a pure white. I would also crop it drastically in a square format.
