I need to learn
« on: February 18, 2010, 10:18:20 PM »
I bought a Bronica ETRS with a 50mm lens in December and have finally got around to using it, not very well I might add. I got the CD of my images back from the developers this morning and it seems I overexposed all bar one shot :(

Here is the picture, taken at work in January with Ilford Delta 400

Dave

Dave- it is not necessarily your fault. Did you check the negatives? They might have messed up in the scanning process. Did you measure the exposure before shooting? I.e. with an exposure meter or just use your digital camera to check? It is very difficult to say from these scans where the issue lies. What surprises me is: the guy has a white shirt on and the background is a white wall? usually the camera under-exposes in these circumstance and you have to override the settings by +1 (at least!) exposure compensation...

Hi Stef, It was defo my fault. I went at it like a bull in a china shop not thinking about anything other than filling the film to get it developed. Heh heh.

I've ordered more film as well as a prism finder to use instead of the waist finder that came with it. This time I will take time and think before taking the shot :)

Rgds,
Dave

Edit, forgot to say. Its a medium grey. The area above/right of his head has a map on it and on the left there is a wall planner. ?? not sure what happened there??

Still...I am not conviced...yet. In your image is the full range from blacks to whites visible. If it would have been blown out entirely why would than the eyes be soo dark??? And his necklace???

You think I should try another developers next time? or get someone to scan the neg again? the rest of the negs have nothing visible at all.

That's the same effect I got when my Minolta 50mm had oily iris blades - is your lens healthy, or is it stuck wide open?

Yes I'd suspect lens iris problems

I'd probably go for a slower film remember than a few years ago 400 ASA was classified as fast - 800 v fast and very little was available at higher ASA

but

surely if you are going retro you need to develop your own !

Still have my 35mm tank in the loft might get it out one day!

Steve / Jim, I've just checked the lens, the blades are not moving at all when i change the apeture. I'll have to try and either find a manual for the lens to disassemble  and clean myself or a workshop that can do it for me.

Cheers for the advice.

Rgds,
Dave

P.S. Jim, I do have some developing kit for my Minolta but am very much a beginner only having developed 2 films. I think this year I will have to put some time aside and learn what I am supposed to do properly instead of winging it.

I like the image but seems very overexposed..  I too am trying to learn film better.

**Not to thread jack but I have a canon AE-1 which I would like to use.  Or use better.. I have not used film much at all.  The lenses have either auto aperture or you can adjust aperture..  how are you to know whether or not an image will turn out good if you choose your own aperture?**
