Beginner....Need Critique!
« on: February 24, 2010, 01:09:08 PM »
Although photography isn`t something new to me, (been in it for 15 years); its only now that i bought my first dSLR, that i`m starting to try to take pictures using creativity and imagination. I work in scene of crime, so this doesn`t allow creativity and imagination....I simply photographed things as they are.
The following are some shots i took with my A300. I`d like to have some general critique about them.....

Sony A300 Dslr, DT 18-70 lens; SAL75300 lens.

Glank 27... ... you asked for it ;)
#1: it's a beautiful candid but the eye closest to the camera should be in focus. It looks slightly too soft to me and the focus seems to be on the nose. With portraits it is actualyl quite essential that the eye(s) is in focus. Wonderful candid though and should you have photoshop CS3 or 4 than it would be worth trying to smart sharpen it. Just make a selection around the eye > copy it onto a new layer > smart sharpen and try the two settings: motion blur or the other blur setting and see what it does to the eye. Use the amount depends on what you need the image for.
#2 I would crop this even further: try to loose the flower pot on the right hand side and his "privates" and to the left just keep the wheel but loose the black part. I think I know what you want to do with this image but I think you need to loose all the distracting stuff.
#3 is a bit too busy for me. Here again I would crop quite dramatically- perhaps even to portrait format just around the middle bush to get a nice silhouette.
#4 would have need a bit more light trail at least for my taste. A thing to do in the future is to take a black card board. Set your camera to bulb setting (you need a remote control or cable release to use this efficiently) and then inbetween cars just hold the black card over your lens. Also the moment you take the card away from your lens because the next car comes hold the cardboard over the top part of your lens to not blow out the building by too much exposure.
#5 - love it! Crop to the right of the wing of the plane to loose a bit on the right hand side.

Hope this helps?

I am quite confident that you will be happy shooter.

Personally I would have reduced the red cheek of the kid a bit. It may have looked like that live, but in a portrait it draws too much attention.

The night shot could have been improved if you had used the DRO function available with JPGs. Or maybe with another setting. Shoot raw + jpg for some time and compare, there are situations where the DRO does things which can not be achieved with RAW and SW.

Plane shots do look better taken from the front.

Very helpful comments.
Stef, you spotted all the things i was aware of, that were wrong or improvable. Yes, the "privates" in photo 2 make it less charming then it should be....:(

Great stuff Glank27. As you are aware, Stef's advice is spot on. However you obviously have a good eye and you just need to develop it some.

Well done, a nice set, I agree with the statement that you do have a good eye for scenes, I cannot add more to what Stef said and in addition to others, other than that I concur to the same.

+4 and +5 are my faves.  As stef said I would love to see more light trails.

Stef: that was a great tip using the black cardboard =D I will have to try that..
